Just some random garden shots- now with no shed! Eventual plan is get the apples/pears in big grow bags and try to espalier if i can. We got some much needed rain yesterday and last night. I planted my first beans in- dragon’s tongue and cantare. Put in nasturtium seeds (i always have poor luck with these, maybe my seeds are old). My potatoes are doing so good! Last time i tried my ex made me put them in the shade and they sure didn’t look like this.

In addition to logan and boysenberries (and also goose and currant, tho i think something ate some of the currants maybe?) my Joan J and Cascade gold raspberries are starting to set fruit, really stoked.

Also yeah, at this point it’s very apparent my figs/poms took damage in that last hard frost. I smooshed them towards the brick wall and hoped for the best since I was too exhausted to bring everything in one last time. They all woke up too early inside so were pretty far along. I guess I’ll see where there at but plan to do some light pruning, meant to anyways especially on my VdB (it looks super goofy bc i I had to trim it significantly in order to get it up the stairs to my apartment last fall).

From what I read (that thread hasn’t been active in a while) a lot of people struggled with the Cardinal. These both look like good specimens though- where did you get yours? I got it since I’m hoping it is the best candidate for pot culture but still good eatin.

Do you have a hose bib up there for watering?

Noooooope! 2 2gal watering cans I carry up and down (because OFC there are a half flight of stairs from the kitchen bathroom level up to the floor where my studio room/deck is).

HOWEVER

I got an idea to jerry rig one of these dog wash things on the tub to a 50’hose so that is hopefully happening in the next week or two when that comes in. Would save me a lot of trouble, tho I guess this is my workout rofl.

I got mine from Wilco. (Farm store)

Huh. never heard of it. By us there’s Roger Wilco which is a suuuuuuper classy booze store rofl

Ha! I guess specifically ‘Wilco Farm Store’.

Had a day running around here and there, towards midafternoon my friend wanted to hang. I suggested in a nearby park so i wasn’t far from home. We wound things up after a bit and as i arrived home saw the UPS man rolling up with my stuff! Took up the whole cart but the heaviest things were some coco coir that happened to arrive at the same time.

Got everything unwrapped just in time for some rain and put the trees into a bucket to soak before heading out for the night. My schedule is super light for the day job next few days (tho i have a ton if shedding for music) so i will have plenty of time to make all the potting mix needed.

my great grandpa had a great back garden at their place in North Philly and my uncle is in South Philly with one; i have figs my great grandpa grew back when he first came over from Milan. my uncle grows them too. no name, they are dark brown with good red inside. they don’t do great here i think they like city living better.

i miss Philly sometimes i lived there for the late 80s until 95 and it’s all fond memories. love to see how your stuff does on the rooftop

There are so many great figs! Did you see the little doc featuring Philly figs and Ross Raddi?
Nice little film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_oZs7HHGUE
Where are you growing them now?

I have a decent chunk Italian roots but not really any exciting stories about figs. My grandmother’s dad was from Segni (outside Rome) and her mom was half Italian roots (from Campobasso), half Hungarian but they grew up pretty Americanized; no speaking Italian to the kids or whatnot and they ate American food except at big family gatherings, trying to get everyone to “fit in”. I get it but of course really valuable traditions are lost.

Update: so I tried to jerry rig the doggie wash thing (it’s called Rinseroo) to the hose I bought (50’ was the perfect length btw) and on first go it leaked everywhere. I guess there is a way to strap it down tighter but it doesn’t look like it included this glorified zip tie thing it’s supposed to come with, so I have to source something. Sigh. More farmer’s carries for me.

Welp, got all the trees in, SOMETHING today. It’s kind of exhausting making up potting mix but it’s just a lot cheaper.

Ended up repotting the persimmon into a 7 gal, put 2 apples into 7 gal i was gonna use for pollinators (uh i guess my aster died) and the rest in 10-15 gal pots. Have 1 20 gal reserved for comice pear and 15 gal bags for all four apples eventually. Idk i may just leave the apples for now.

Mother nature was nice and watered the plants for me today lol.

plan this week is getting more compost from the city to plant out my greenstalks and fill my melon, squash, and okra bags. Then plant out with what i have as seedlings, or seeds for okra/melons/squash.

Ps the trees and huckleberry all looked great but the blackberries and blueberry were kinda meh, and the tahi black raspberry is literally a twig sticking out of a soil plug. We will see if they can wake up!
