Picking Seckel pears

I started picking them…A few had fallen and were soft…most are still firm/hard…a mix of sizes…some jumbos in the mix (like Bartlett pear size)…plenty of smalls/mediums… This is all off 1 tree that has probably been in the ground for 7 to 8 years. I can’t believe how productive one tree can be. No spray on this tree at all. I think i have at least a bucket or more yet to fill if i can get the top of the tree (probably 15 feet tall). Highly recommend Seckel…very sweet …smooth. juicy.

that’s quite the haul you have there…what are your plans for all of those pears??

has the tree always been this productive, or was this an unusually bountiful crop?

Rob,

Great looking harvest.

What size is that tree and how long in the ground?

Mike

It has produced for years…nothing like this. The branches were bending this year. I have 2 bartlett trees (not producing yet) and a Harrow Sweet that is pretty full with fruit although its a smaller tree.

Just a guess…but i bet next year there will be way less fruit…

These ones are already in my chest freezer set up with a tstat that allows me to set the temperature just above freezing. I’ll probably give away the rest of them that are on the tree.

I got the tree in 2006 i think…but i moved it a year or 2 later…to its current spot. So maybe 8 years…give or take a year in its current spot.

Great looking Harvest! Can you take some close up pictures of the individual fruit? I have a tree with Seckel scions on it and I’m curious about the fruit. I’ve been told they are fairly slow growing though those claims sound like they have been exaggerated.

Probably towards the large size for Seckel…i’ve had some bigger but not many.

Harrow Sweet…have no idea when these are ready to pick

Warmwxrules,

Great looking fruits! I planted a bare root Seckel last year and this year it put up about 3 feet of growth. Maybe I’ll start getting some fruits next year if I’m lucky…

All of these pear pictures sure look good. Hopefully I will have something to share in a year to two.

I found an old post from 2011 and i had 20lbs that year… so yeah… its a good producer even when young. I looked again…my tree is probably ballpark 15 feet tall…and 10 feet wide… Typical Christmas tree shape.

I’ll try to prune and keep mine short, starting next year!

Warm,

What rootstocks are your pears on?

No idea on the Seckel…i believe it came from Gurneys… Seems very winter hardy. The Harrow sweet is from ACN …OHF 97

Holy Toledo. That’s a LOT of Sekels! Fortunately, they are outstanding pears! And, your Harrow Sweet look fantastic as well. Very well done.

Congratulations on your nice pear harvest!

Thanks for posting the pictures, I’m amazed at how blemish free they look with no spraying. This gives me encouragement and hope that maybe in a few years I might see bounties like yours! I’m really looking forward to tasting a Seckel, I’ve heard they are super sweet.

Fantastic looking fruit!!!

@warmwxrules

What all pears are you growing now?
