My Unique is also loaded with flowers, many straight on the branches. I only have 5 total varieties but this one is a stand out in the flowering department. My limited experience grafting them also seems to show that they are more difficult to graft. 5/5 fails vs 2/2 all successful Takaka grafts.
My unique is flowering more than any other feijoa as well!
Yes, same here. My other ones are more evenly spread out.
When I bought this one it was very small and holding 10 fruits. I was told it was self fruitful so maybe they will hang on. Feijoa flowers are my sons favorite snack in the yard
Good to know! I haven’t grafted Feijoas yet. Maybe next season.
Thanks for the info!
I’ve had one ten-flower cluster over the years. I am skeptical that the bloom cluster fruits would all attain normal size, and if so, might break the branch. So I pinched off half of the blossoms in my cluster.
That’s a whole bush’s worth of flower buds for me.
You are probably right but I will let it grow to see what happens lol.
Same for me last year, which is why I was so shocked when I saw it.
Restoring eden will have a new variety of feijoa by Saturday
A new shipment of things came in today for them.
Do you know the name of this variety?
It was weird. I forgot it already but it isn’t anything that I’ve heard if i recall correctly. I was at their enumclaw location earlier today and trying to listen while wrangling a 2 year old was hard…
I will know on Saturday or when they get to Seatac lol
I’ve been resisting the urge to get more feijoa. Already have too many!!
No thanks for posting that picture of the variegated one.
I’ll wait for a fruit review on the variegated one before I inevitably buy one!
I’m still waiting for a guide on grafting these. No matter how much success I have, it all seems quite random.
Yeah I’m like 2/30 on my grafting attempts with these. Close to 100% with all other types of plants, it’s pretty discouraging.
I’ll have to come back to this question in a few years lol. Have no idea right now.
My local store had them in stock! For those who are curious and have never tasted them fresh: the name is perfect. They taste like a pineapple flavored guava the texture was very similar to a guava, and the pineapple flavor was like a slightly sour pineapple. BUT unlike guavas which in my opinion have annoying seeds, these don’t have those at all! I like it more than the average guava but less then the best guava I’ve had in my life.
If someone can show how to reliably grow fruit in 7a (winter protection, in pots, etc) I’ll try it!
You should save some seeds to try and experiment with. At least you won’t be out any real money if they die…
Good idea- I just saved a few.
Also, the skin is a little bitter and the inner most pulp where the seeds are is the sweetest and least sour. The seeds are small and not noticeable at all.
To my great surprise, 5 out of 6 of the little Feijoas I planted early season last year are flowering. Do most people pick the flowers until the shrub is more mature or should I wait and see what happens with the fruitlets?
Eat the white petals, they are delicious.
