Pineapple Pear in Northeast

Planted a potted pear labeled as Bartlett over 15 years ago. Finally figured it’s likely a Pineapple.
Fruit quality and yield has been highly variable. This year with unusually dry, sunny conditions they’re pretty good so far.
It came from a southern grower, and it seems this is considered mainly a southern pear.
Just wondering if anyone in the northeast has any experience with these.

Jeff,

I’m not in the NE but just let me know if you need some help identifying it.

OK, Clark, will try to send pix…

Jeff,

Many pears are misidentified. The ones in the photo are not pineapple pears. They are great looking big pears. These are pineapple pears. I am zone 6a and they grow great here. I realize they are considered a southern pear.

i bought a pineapple pear for my daughter for her birthday last spring not knowing much about it. its cold hardy here and has grown well. will it have time to ripen its fruit in z4b Clark? if not, i can graft it over to a few of my 10 varieties i have grafted. i took a scion of it and have it grafted to my ivans beauty hybrid mtn. ash. its a very vigorous grower.

I think it will be very close, but i think they would be a great, really late pear. Leave them on the trees until the snow starts flying just above 30 degrees, then pick them , and bring them inside. They have a yellow color like the one i ate today when they are totally ripe. They produce abundant fruits and they are crisp , sweet and somewhat tangy. To name them pineapple pears is a stretch. It must have been for the yellow color.

You will have plenty of time to ripen them. Make sure nothing shades them and slows them down. Our seasons are weird as well. I hurry up and wait many times a year now. Trying to collect scions or fruit etc has a much smaller window now.

they are in a great spot that gets full sun all day. ill graft a few more scions on it for good measure.

Well, they’re not as dark as the photo but, yes, most photos show them much lighter and not all russeted like mine. I don’t get all day sun.
The tree is very upright and is pickable starting mid August here.
Guess I’ll never really know what it is.

If you can photograph the foliage i can take a shot at identifying them. I have grown a lot of pears. Might be a chance i will recognize the leaves.
