@Richard I have questions! How old is your tree? What is its mature height? If the typical 40-60’ do you have a plan to keep it smaller? How could one keep it under 15’ and healthy?
I have been trying to figure out how to fit in a walnut without sacrificing my peaches.
Ah yes, I didn’t look that far back. What other nut trees have you had success with? I’m guessing pecan, macadamia, pistachio and almond would potentially do well at your location.
I’m on a 1/4 acre parcel, relatively small for fruit & nut trees. The walnut and it’s rootstock are a manageable size and growth rate. I tried ‘Garden Prince’ almond, but it did not survive the combination of soil and marine layer climate, succumbing to bark rot. Macadamia does well here, although they develop into very large trees. There’s a nice specimen next door. Pecan and pistachio would not tolerate this climate, and pecans are also potentially large trees.
@Mcjuj
Just as another data point for you, there is a sizeable acreage near Lake Matthews growing pistachios in high-tunnels. I suspect the tunnels are for pest control, but it’s speculation.
They won’t get more than 300 chill hours there. I’d be interested to see if they have success there or whether they’re using new cultivars adaptable to low chill.
