Has anyone planted blackberries next to their house? I have one each of Arapaho and Ouachita, both the erect type. I am thinking about planting them on the side of my house but could not find information online about pros and cons of doing that.
The back of my house faces due east and I have a couple crowns of loganberry planted there. They get lots of morning sun… but no evening sun and they love it there.
Blackberries may need more sun.
It is nice and acceptable to me to have an abundance of berries just a few steps from my back porch.
Logans
ive never thought to plant anything in the east facing part which is in front of the house for me. i may just plant your loganberry starts there. would also protect from cold nw winter winds. great idea. i didnt think that anything would grow there but obviously i was wrong. you have yours strung on a trellis?
Yes… a trellis 8ft tall 12 ft wide and they cover it completely and run off the ends.
They like my southern heat… hope they do well for you.
Nothing fancy @steveb4 … but it works.
Once they start sending out fruiting laterals in the spring that entire trellis area is covered in a thick mass as shown in that previous pic.
looks awesome. im stealing your idea.
DanD: If you aggressively prune the erect-type berries in an espalier manner, keeping the row to a very narrow plane, then caneberries can be located near a house. In my area, 8b in the PNW, south- or west-facing walls would be too hot for some varieties.
How far from the foundation are you planning to plant?
There is a 4ft bed on the southwest side of my house, between the house and a cement walkway. I was thinking of planting in the middle of the bed, so about 2ft from the foundation. There is also space on the southeast side of the house but it’s only 12 maybe 18 inches between the house and the cement walkway so I’d have to plant 6 to 9 inches from the foundation.
The 4-foot bed is certainly doable; the narrower bed is possible but production would be less because half of the potential growth would need to be kept pruned away. Any ripe berries that get moved by wind or birds can stain house siding.
@DanD …
This guy planted a nice raspberry bed all along one side of his garage.
I this vid you can see what it looks like early summer… and he shows a pic of it in winter too.
Raspberries … at least for me … make a denser planting (mass of canes) than blackberries do.
He makes a pretty nice trellis for his toooo.
