I got a 3g liberty blueberry this winter and it flowered in February (!!) and managed to set some fruit (hand pollinating). I had meant to plant it out in March, but was afraid to with the fruit developing, then I got distracted with all my gardening projects. Given that it is now ripening fruit, should I leave it potted until fall? Or who cares, it’ll be fine and plant it? Is there a general rule for fruiting container plants and whether or not you disturb roots if avoidable? I just got a kishu mandarin covered in fruit that I’m up potting, but I don’t feel great about it.
I culled 20 sum blueberry plants and by culled i mean i threw them on a bank last fall roots and all… they have been snowed on, frozen, sun baked… everything… and i noticed a month ago that they were blooming and still ‘healthy’.
So i gave 10 to a neighbor whom is ecstatic… and i am putting 10 in old buckets or old pots that i have to live their best lives…
I had another 10 that i also removed and set in a storage tote for a guy that i know… he procrastinated all winter and they sat in a solid block of ice. They thawed then bloomed and he got them a few weeks ago… and is happy with them.
Long story short… im not sure they can be killed or it even matters… at least here.
I’d be tempted to pull all the berries and blossoms this year, plant it, and let it focus on growing roots and getting established. Next year you’ll have even more berries and a very healthy plant.
That being said, it’d also probably be just fine and survive if you didn’t. It just might not be as vibrant or productive next year.
We only have 2 early blueberry bushes here. Our neighbor blueberry farm has 3 hectares of them and they are absolutely loaded right now.
Y’all use hectares in south GA? I would’ve expected you to just say bout 7 and a half acres. I suppose our international members appreciate the metric though.
Either way, that’s a lot of tons or tonnes of blueberries
Sure. Some of us are bi-system lingual…lol 100 meters Squared is fairly easy to get used too. Certain things are more annoying. Like Kilometers per liters. Kilometers in general annoys me. Imperial just feels…less filling!
