Top squirrel or bird maybe, and bottom wasp and/or bird would be my best guesses.

Thanks for the replies. This is a mystery to me. Once the damage starts, it seems the wasps and bees do some more, but I assume something is causing the initial damage.
It looks like wasp damage to me. They can start attacking it at a weak spot, for example the lower apple had curculio earlier in the season.
