Plum curculio 2024

I did my pear and peach couple weeks ago, put couple Surround layers.
My apples were still in bloom, so I put on a very light Surround coat Sunday evening. I should have repeated it on Monday because of the warm temperatures we’re having.

That doesn’t look like PC–not ugly enough.

Note the brown/black coloring and bumpiness of the PC.

There are many different curculios, many go after fruits so it isn’t much difference.

I got my first bites maybe ten days ago. With Surround you need to spray right at petal fall or the curc will have a party. So far I have only minor damage but there are three weeks or more where good protection with Surround is needed.

This year things seem better than usual; I tried to be much better about picking up drops last spring compared to previous years and I think it helped. I have a trash bag in the orchard and just plop them in there. Boy that thing stunk in June! Fermented curc. It made an outhouse smell good … not joking.

I use that that anaerobic juice as deer deterrent, in a cheap spray bottle in case it clogs.

Good information from everyone here about the PC problem.

Same here, sprayed everything except my apples which are still in bloom

I was out at dawn this morning in the fog and the odor of Imidan from spraying a few days ago gave me peace of mind that my peaches were protected from PC.

Have a decent Surround coat already, gives me some peace of mind.

According to the Cornell calculator PC should be over in my area by May 24. My second spray was May 20th. So far fruit looks good. Unless I see some problems I won’t spray for them again this year. I think I’m getting better at spray scheduling.

I sprayed on 5/17. Guess what? it rained on 5/18 (forecast called for sprinkles but it rained).

I also need to spray for OFM which comes a couple of weeks later and has more generations.

I sprayed yesterday and the previous Sunday. Last week was very wet, so I figured my Triazicide was mostly washed off.

My next spray will be this Fri.

I am a bit nervous because we will have night temp over 60F tomorrow night and Wed night. Often, that’s when PC show up in drove.

I started spraying in Minnesota 1.5 weeks ago. It’s my first time using surround, I hope to get some plums this year. Last year the curculio destroyed every single one. Really takes the joy out of the hobby to have that happen. The war is on.

I could have start earlier as I found a Juliet cherry already had an egg in it.

Thanks for reminding me of this resource. I made a bookmark of it so I won’t forget next year. I have started thinning in earnest the last few days as the PC seemed to be winding down but it was good to see that the calculator confirms that (it says “no longer active”).

My damage ended up being slightly less than the usual… white apricots nailed as usual and Pristine and a few other curc-favorite apples also nailed, and everything else was within what I had to thin out anyway.

It’s supposed to rain every other day for the next week with daily highs of 70 and nighttime temps if 50 or so. Should I spray between storms? Weather makes it hard to decide.

I had a period of similar weather and didn’t see any PC activity. PC activity picked up immediately when when sunny days and warm humid nights returned.

I’m not 100% if it was coincidental with the weather, YMMV.

I would and make sure to add sticker in the tank.

We have had rain one or twice a week here.

My new orchard is on a hilltop in the middle of an 80 acre field that had been farmed heavily for 70 years and was recently divided up. Other than my 8 acres, the rest is still farmed and treated. My trees are hundreds of feet from the nearest woods. Trees are 2 to 3 years old. I had only one single plum on one Toka tree, and it still ended up getting hit by PC. I really thought I’d escape their wrath for awhile. I guess not, lol. I don’t understand what sustains them when there are no proper fruit trees nearby. My guess is crabapple trees somewhere in the general vacinity.

At my home orchard, my first round of sprays went well. The weather cooled a bit two weeks later, went ahead and sprayed anyway. Lots of fruit set, minor PC damage so far. Lots of thinning needed. I hate to do a third spray but it is quite a bit hotter now, maybe they were sluggish during those cooler weeks.

I have been adding a bit of borax to the tank. I forget the name of the person in here who recommended that but he has a hound dog in his profile pic. Would you recommend anything other than that?

It’s been raining for a few days and I can still see some surround from the initial applications but much has washed away.
