Plum tree death ID

Well, this is my first tree death that was non rodent related. My Stanley plum has kicked the bucket. I’ve had it for a couple years. Over a couple weeks all the leaves turned black from the tips inward and died. Its a shame since it had a whole lot of flowers this spring. Here’s a picture:

Any thoughts on what that was?

Also, any suggestions on replacement? One thought was a Superior plum. I’m also curious about Emerald beaut, but I’m a little hesitant give my 5b maritime status in Maine.

That also reminds me of another question. Stanley was a prune type plum, good for drying, is it possible to dry fresh eating plums like superior and still get something you’d want to eat?

Thanks everyone!

Forget Emerald Beaut. It’s way too late for Maine. Also I don’t find Superior superior to much else. And I’d not try drying a runny plum like that.

I’d consider the stuff Alan likes: Castleton, Valor and possibly Vision if it’s not too late maturing.

I would also check Fedco catalog to see what they say about plums for colder zones. They are from Maine and offers cold hardy fruit trees.
