The pictures below are of a plum tree that my wife’s uncle grows. She loves these but I can’t figure out what they are. They eat them while still sour (greenish/yellow). The original tree was planted in the 60’s. The one that the pictures are taken from is about 12 y/o but only produces a handful of fruit each year. There’s no other plum trees near by so I’m thinking that my be the reason for the low fruit setting. This makes me think maybe it at least has some Japanese genetics.
I’m not concerned with what variety this is as what type pollenator it needs. They live just north of Birmingham, AL zone 8a. The pictures were taken on 6/3/24.
A close-up of the leaves would make identification easier.
If your looking to graft on a pollinator branch, I think Myrobalan plum will pollenate most Japanese and European plums, and should be graft compatible with both as well.
I wish I had better pictures, maybe I’ll be down there sometime this spring/summer. Thanks for the grafting idea, I’ll let him know about that.
After asking around some more family members, we’ve been told they think it’s a Flavor Queen Pluot. That would make sense why it’s not setting fruit, it’s the only J-plum around. The first picture definitely looks like it could be.
