We got plums which is not a small task here. Think plums might be one of our hardest fruits to grow here next to apricots and kiwi. These plums are rough looking but the pictures are shown below. These came from my new plum trees. I graft over the smaller fruited ones and keep the larger fruited seedlings. These were picked from half a dozen different trees so the taste, color. size, etc will be different on each.
Are those native American plums? or a marketed variety? Our wild plums are no where near ripe yet, even then I have never found one I liked. However, I have been told the bitterness is in the skin and I have never peeled and eaten any.
These are a cross of several plums so they are a little bit of everything. the native plums are not ripe yet.
They look great to me. I’ve been looking locally here in S. IN for anyone that would have our Native American Plum, and would share a few sucker trees, but no luck so far. My Grandparents homestead had several trees and thickets, all with a medium size yellow/red blush plum, very sweet with a hint of tart in the skin. All those and that land has been bulldozed, sadly… If I can’t find any before Spring I will buy a few and hope for the best. Does anyone have a recommendation for a Nursery having the Native plum? I know there are several regional varities, Gooseplum, Beach Plum, etc. Any suggestions?
Poorwolf you can shoot me a PM if interested. I can get you some native plums.
Thank you! On a tablet right now, will send a note from the desktop tomorrow. For fall planting or Spring? I probably sound nuts wanting the native, but always liked it for jelly and jams. Greg
