Pluot identification

As I’ve posted elsewhere, one of my very biggest pet peeves are grocery stores that market “black plums” or “yellow peaches”. Aaargh…apparently they don’t want to sell much fresh produce. For the most part I refuse to purchase fruit that isn’t properly marked, but I do like some of the pluots that I’ve tried and I’m trying to taste as many of them as I can get in PA or NY. A few weeks ago I tried some Dapple Dandies purchased at Wegmans (and properly marked I might add). My entire family really enjoyed that one. They were firm, yet still quite juicy and flavorful. Since then, I’ve purchased two other varieties, marked only as “Dinosaur Brand” and “sold exclusively through Mike Jackson farms, Kingsburg, CA”.

The one on the left looks very similar to the Dapple Dandy from a few weeks ago and may be the same fruit. I tasted one as I left the store and the flesh was more red and less mottled than the DD, but when I got home, I cut this one up for the photo and it was similar (and tasted better than the one I had at the store). The one on the right I have no clue. Personally I didn’t care for it and thought it was mostly tasteless, though it was ridiculously juicy and still fairly firm when I bought it (a week before the photo was taken).

Any guesses as to the varieties? I presume the first one to be Dapple Dandy or one of the other Dapple varieties, but I have no clue on the second one.

Kingsburg Orchards produce a whole bunch of proprietary pluots, your guess is as good as mine.

Stan has it nailed. There are dozens of pluots we’ll never get to grow. ID will be difficult.

@GANGGREEN Now this will PO you even more. I really doubt that you tasted Dapple Dandy several weeks ago. That’s an August fruit. But since it’s well know they are likely selling earlier varieties like Dapple Supreme as DD. I like DS better than DD and it’s ripe 6-8 weeks earlier.

Nope, doesn’t really tick me off, but it makes me wonder if I can get a hold of a Dapple Supreme tree in the meantime. You mentioned earlier that you weren’t impressed by DD, but that you liked DS and I really liked this one a lot, so you’re probably right.

Wow, you aren’t kidding, that’s a bunch of them. You’re also correct that either of these could be one of several I’m sure.

I believe they are Dapple Dino pluots. I bought a couple if pounds today from Costco and the box said Dapple Dino pluots; mine look similar to yours.

Could be. I’ve purchased the Dapple Dino or Dinosaur egg pluots before, but really thought they had a bit more of a green background and more obvious red spotting. Did you enjoy yours?

Reviving this … Just got some of these from Costco and are absolutely amazing. Skin is barely tart and are nice and firm, not mushy when you bit into them. The pit is also about the size of a dime, it’s a cling.

Anyone figured out what these are or something that is close flavor profile wise? I’m not a fan of plums, but I’m sold on these.
