Hi All, I have some poms that were producing heavily until they got beat up during a hurricane. Then several cold (for us) Winters. It’s been 5 or so years now. I cleaned them up after the storm and again after a 10° Winter event. They survived and have regrown, but no fruit. What should I do? Thanks!
Hi Pokeweed.
I have had a large ‘Wonderful’ die back to just about nothing one winter. It took a couple of years for it to come back - and although I didn’t mark it on a calendar - it seemed to fruit much faster the second time around. Maybe that is because its root system was not damaged - and there was so much more root to support the ‘grow back’. ?
Pomegranate varieties each seem to have their own particular ‘secrets’. Some fruit faster than others. Some . . . not at all ! Perhaps that is because of differences in soils or climate . . . or just their own varietal quirks. Who knows??? A few of mine consistently produce beautiful fruit - but it never matures without fungal damage.
More than anything else I have tried to grow . . . Pomegranates are the biggest ‘crapshoot’. If you like surprises . . . then try growing a pomegranate tree!
P.S. - 'just thought of something. Did you fertilize to try to give it a boost? Sometimes this has been helpful with my trees . . . and sometimes seemed to work against me. If you’ve been fertilizing, maybe you could try skipping it for the next couple of years and see if that helps.
These made bunches of fruit for several years before the storm. I will fertilize them. Thanks!
