I am trying to see what the pear look like. As usual, several nurseries have different pictures of their “Potomac”. ACN has this pic. The pear in the front to the right look quite different from the rest of the group.
No wonder I have hard time when I look at these pear pics.
These threads get long there are some up a ways in this thread. Here are some photos from above. They taste much like anjou but better when they are home grown.
Hope all is going well with retirement. My hopes are you found a wonderful peice of land where you are now happily growing many potomac pears you can enjoy with sharp cheese.
I have a nice Potomac tree. I finally learned how to train to Central Leader . . . and my Potomac cooperated very well. No pears yet. And it has several other varieties grafted to it. But, now with all the ‘Potomac Praise’ - if any of the grafts bear ‘so so’ fruit . . .
off they go and I’ll keep the Potomac branches!
I do have Magness! I replaced a central leader on one of my trees with Magness. I’ll have to look to see if it has produced any fruit yet. Pears seem to stay pretty healthy here. I have an Anjou and a Bartlett - and even they are staying healthy! I was surprised. I read they are troublesome.
I added 2 grafts of potomac and 2 of bell to my kiefer pear on callery. And added 2 grafts of warren and 2 of karls favorite to my improved kiefer tree on callery.
All of them grew well this year.
I plan to add a couple grafts of maxine next spring… that should be all the pears I need.
I love them more than 90% of pears. When you taste them you will ask yourself why your not growing 10 trees of them. I am growing an entire row of them.
