Pots and bags and containers, oh my!

I just chatted with another rep at Lowe’s and this person said it will no longer be sold at Lowe’s.

After digging around, I found 9 (that’s what online says, I will be going there on Thursday to get other things) bags of this.

It took me awhile to find pine bark mulch locally a year ago, but I finally found some sources.

This Golden Trophy #9312 pine bark mulch is awesome. I use it on every potted berry plant. They also carry “mini nuggets” but those have much larger bark pieces that I have started to use only for my in-ground berry plants. Lowes has a shredded pine bark mulch that’s in-between the size of the #9312 and the “mini nuggets”.

I got some a few weeks ago. Have used simikar in the past and got surprising amount of life from the pot. More than 5 years. Didn’t move it though.

the only pine bark I’ve found here is the coarse stuff and i dont have any way of grinding it down more. im in the middle of logging country. you would think the stuff would be available everywhere. i could go to the mill lots but that’s a 1.5hr trip 1 way. not worth it.

I just went to my Menards to get the 9312 and it turns out they don’t have it. I did pick up a couple of bags of the Golden Trophy “Mini Nuggets” that are not so mini. I’m just going to use them for some mulch on top of my Cherry Tomato buckets.

Other Menards stores show the 9312 in stock. I need to inquire if they will do a store transfer and bring some in for me.

It’s possible your local store will get it in soon. It was a couple weeks after I had asked about it that they finally received stock.

I hope so because I’m striking out on finding true mini nuggets or fines. The other one I posted from Timberline was perfect, but no one carries it anymore. They were small 1/4” pieces. The “mini” nuggets I am finding now are upwards of 3”!

The Golden Trophy is 1cu ft and the Walmart/Lowes stuff is 2 cu ft.

more bang for your buck on the 2 cu ft for me.

It all turns to dust after its broke down anyways.

hmm… never thought of this.

This is what I’ve been wanting to do as strawberry beds!!! But i could never find cheap tubes! Never thought of this but now I’m going to collect buckets

Where can one find those giant black tubes?

These?

are at Lowes/Home Depot etc… i think they sell them in 10ft pieces and 50ft pieces.

I think if i do the buckets (i have alot of them)… a door hole drill bit would work. and be much simpler.

Bucket quality has really went down… the red ones and white ones that are cheap dont last. The Hart brand that walmart sold a few years ago seem much better quality.

The food grade ones seem much better made… i have some buckets that had frosting or something in them and some pickle buckets that are over 10 years old. The buckets with oil in them seem to be better quality too… kinda a pain to clean though.

Anyways maybe your town has free ones?

I think FB marketplace has lots of buckets too at least in my area… theres businesses that buy/sell business stuff like buckets and barrels and food grade stuff in bulk.

The box store buckets i dont think are worth buying. Some kind of chinese recycled plastic or something any more.

The huge ones, that looks small?

24 inch drain pipe… sold at just about every box store. Pricey but maybe cheaper than the alternatives of raised bed materials etc…

Not sure if they cut them to length in store or not.

I was able to find this at my local Bucheit. It is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

turned a few 5g buckets into pots with step bit holes on the sides:

the roots on these trees arent very big so i left a bunch of room to be able to up pot into the same container when needed.

you can see that sand has the opposite effect of perlite, in that it separates and sinks compared to separating and floating. not sure how people who do 50/50 peat/sand are dealing with that :man_shrugging::

I ‘unpotted’ 4 trees from Freedom Tree Farms that i purchased recently. Their mix seems to be 100 percent pine bark with some fert. It works no doubt in my mind.

I am at about 75 percent pine bark with fines and chunks in my repotting and potting of bare roots now.

I used these this year. I made what is essentially an in ground bed. Our area doesn’t have great soil for blueberries. Amending didn’t work, so I made my own soil mix and buried these 21 gallon tubs. I used a hole saw and put five 2.5” holes in for drainage. I used 50:50 peat moss and pine bark for the growing medium. You can see my progress in the background of the picture below.

I did the same thing last year with giant salvaged plastic pots from a local nursery. Best growth on blueberries I’ve ever had.

That stuff gets expensive really fast when you realize how much filler you really need.
