I ordered black currant and 2 varieties of black goji berry seeds from Plant World last spring and planted them after the last frost. Excellent germination and growth! There are other berry seeds available.
Two!
Big Black
Black Pearls
Both loaded with anthocyanin and other phytonutrients.
Growing from seed means every plant has a different genome and allows selecting the best plants for local conditions.
When you buy two packs of a variety they give a third one free so you’ll have a lot of seeds to experiment with. My seeds arrived 12 days after I ordered.
I like growing from seed, but prefer to cross my own seeds. Fun to see what you get. Also sometimes volunteers are nice too. My biggest success so far is a primocane fruiting black raspberry that grows better than Niwot, and has better flavor too in it’s primocane fruit.
Also berries are uniformly large, not just the first few in a cluster.
Floricane fruit.
I have many other seedlings too. I’ll always play around with them. Anyway so you never know what you get when growing from seed, any seed!. Once in a while you get something interesting! Worth doing.
I was asked earlier by somebody. If I can make enough clones sure. It so far seems to be a real winner. The other one I crossed with Jewel is OK, but nothing special except for the primocane fruiting trait. Niwot’s primocane berries taste bad, my plant they are better and edible at least. Not as good as floricane.berries though. Niwot’s floricane berries are very good.Ironic as my plant died, and all I have is the 2 offspring. The Ontario wild yellow/brown cap is the reason it is vigorous and strong. I keep it around for future crosses.
I also worked with red and yellows and crossed them hoping for an orange raspberry. Well I almost succeeded. It does turn orange
