Many of us have found tree prices have increased again. This is a pretty normal price to pay for a tree you want now. $114 is the new $15 tree. I’m not bringing this up to talk price or finances and certainly not accounting or economics. You have people and other websites for that. This post is to say if you want something fruiting i chose to buy it now and not wait. Waiting seems to be people’s biggest mistake yet. I thought some prices would be temporary but they are not. This is the normal price from now on. Prices have not dropped on fruit trees in years.
With Treesofantiquity, i noticed that the caliper size for my orders went down, while the price went up. I am shifting towards buying root stock and make my own. Scions can often be obtained for free from friends or local scion exchanges.
I seriously thought about buying clonal rootstock liners, growing them out and grafting them later. At least you get more rootstock choice. But then you are looking at 500 or 1000 liner order minimums.
It’s relatively unusual for anything to go down in price year over year. If you want something now and can afford it, buy it.
The rootstock and graft route is looking more appealing every year. Even accounting for the time and losses it’s hard to justify 00+ for a single tree when scion exchanges exist and most people on forums like this are happy to share.
