If I don’t have access to dormant fig cuttings, is it possible to do softwood?
Yes, it is. It is considered harder and more challenging, but absolutely possible. It depends on how green it is, but typically greener cuttings need more humidity to prevent dryout.
If possible wait til they lignify a bit, totally green will probably just wilt. What has worked for me is covering the pot with a plastic bag (in the shade) and cutting off most of the leaves.
Where the green shoots come up out of the ground. If you take care to get them out of the ground they have some root on them. I’ve had some luck using those. Not great luck, but some.
Another option may be layering/air layering figs. I had luck the one time I tried it. Scratch some bark off and mound soil over it. Once it roots, cut it off and transplant.
That works great. I did 10 last year and all but one had roots at the end of the summer.
