Is there a list of identified varieties available to the public?
How does WSU themselves decide what a (rare/unusual) varieties name is?
Like…if I just walked in with an apple- told them it was called a ‘Glockenspiel’- and it didn’t show up in prior named apples, would they just call it that?
Reason for query? In reading Beach’s ‘Apples of NY’, I’ve come across a few ‘now vs. then’ discrepancies. I’ve been through this before about a turnip/rutabaga hybrid.
My understanding is you send them a leaf and they use the axiom 480k apple array and see if it is a match. I would think you would have the naming rights if you sent it and it is novel.
I have 2 legacy apple trees on my property I took pictures of and emailed them yesterday actually, so I don’t have a whole lot of information.Preformatted text
No, there is a ‘famous turnip’ variety near where I grew up- it’s the ‘state vegetable’ actually.
Some (relative) newcomers started marketing seeds for it and it sort of became a civil war, since most of the old timers who would know swore that it wasn’t the real thing, and that the seeds they’d kept since forever were the ‘one true turnip’.
Compounding the problem was that the original grower propagated his seed stock by cuttings, since anyone with real horticultural knowledge will tell you that attempting to maintain brassica hybrids by seed is a bad bet.
The old folks are all gone, and most of the younger ones couldn’t give a flyer. I passed the knowledge down to my market gardener daughter and she said, “Why do you have to stir s%#t up? They’re a good turnip- so just leave things be!”
I just asked if they could ID the other parent to Winekist, since Malus niedzwetzkyana is likely to be one.
Will report their preliminary answer. (It’s Christmas Eve, so the reply may take weeks.) If they can check the parentage, I will also report that result, if that happy day comes.
To ID amidst their database costs $50. If it costs more to check its parentage, I consider that worth it.
Did y’all ever end up getting the testing done and have results? I filled out the form on the website around a month ago and haven’t gotten any response.
