was given two bags of preen mulch (while searching for hardwood mulch for my winecap bed!)
it’s preen. I can’t put it where I’ll plant seeds and I can’t grow mushrooms in it I don’t think. is it safe to put around older trees? lilies that are coming up? etc
I could try to smother out one spot that’s got bindweed but I’m going to put figs in that spot this fall- will it still be there and hurt em? it’s mulch with “extended action” of all things.
edit; no chip drop yet, and those are usually pine here, I’m still as always looking for any local source of hardwood chip, logs or etc. ugh
I know once upon a time Preen was corn gluten. If that is still the active ingredient I wouldn’t be concerned about using it to smother the bindweed or around established trees.
this is mulch made by preen and has 0.0032% Trifluralin (Treflan) and 0.0008% Isoxaben (Gallery) infused into it. it’s not just the corn gluten it’s got these in it. if it was just the corn I wouldn’t worry
Does anyone have a photo of their full grown or well along, hachiya, tanenashi, or fuyu (type) persimmon?
I need to replace a dogwood that is about 15-20 ft from house and want to make sure there’s adequate space to get between the house and the tree when it’s full grown. Or have a recommendation of 3?
A small fuyu variety to my knowledge is IKKJ (Ichi Ki Kei Jiro) which should work well in 7b. I don’t have photos of a mature tree though. Mines a stick
Brand new arctic star nectarine. Just noticed the leaves eaten and found a very tiny all pale green larva that I naturally forgot to take a picture of before destroying. Didn’t seem to have any brown on it, any idea what it was/what did this? I’m a bit flabbergasted that I already have a problem given I got it about 2-3 weeks ago and I certainly haven’t seen a single moth out yet. The bees have only just started coming around.
Does anybody have experience with the cold hardiness of French tarragon? I have seen claims ranging from “cannot survive frost” to “survive down in zone 4 on well-drained soil” (Territorial Seed has theirs as 5-9, which seems optimistic).
I cannot atest to its cold hardiness, but I know it can regrow from its rootball. Ours died when it got too dry for it, and now its popping up from the roots now that it has rained a couple times.
Plant or pot it and see what happens… Good chance it will grow just fine I bet. Much smaller wood than that, from a cutting from a limb… Of species of things that rooting hormone works on. Can put out enough roots to take off and go. Imagine how much stored energy there is in that, and it’s already primed to grow roots.
