We had a couple of bad ice storms earlier this winter and my Smyrna quince lost one of its two main branches. As I think about how I want to prune the tree from here, I have a few options for a replacement leader, if I decide to replace the one that broke. One of the options is a watersprout from the soil, but I have no idea what to expect from it. The tree is only three or four years old and doesn’t have an obvious graft, so could this be on its own root? Does quince grow from seed true to type? If the graft is, as I suspect, just healed over cleanly and this sprout is from a rootstock, what might that be? Is this going to be worth growing out for the eventual fruit, or should I train one of the Smyrna twigs as a replacement?
Thanks!
