A thread for short, helpful hints that don’t fit somewhere else.
When tending to your garden, don’t forget to duck when passing by the lower horizontal branches of larger plants.
any small garden tool that you carry around with you- get the brighter color handle version of it or paint or dip it to be a bright color.
you WILL set it on the ground next to you and lose it.
like my last 2 pocket knives. i usually eventually find them stuck into something a few years later.
Weeding. Get in the habit of weeding on a regular basis. Weeds WILL overtake and overwhelm if regular weeding is neglected.
Don’t stick Small pruners in your pants front pocket and try to climb a ladder ![]()
I second this!
I keep reminding myself every day that I have to find some neon colored tape to put on all my tools. Glad I am not the only one with this problem. I feel so stupid every time. ![]()
Use old milk jugs or vinegar bottles to harden off tomato and melon seedlings in your garden when night temps are still too chilly for their liking. I use the translucent ones- clear ones bake the plants.
BTW, these last a few years… the price on the cap for a gallon of milk was $1.29!
my father did this. great for frost protection as well.
Cutting your fingernails really short before grubbing about in the soil is much easier than afterwards trying to dig out all the dirt beneath them.
Don’t leave rakes on the ground with the teeth pointing upwards.
To add to that, always wear glasses when gardening. My glasses have saved my eyes a couple of times. In the summer if out for a while sunglasses are better.
If you don’t use gloves scratch a soap bar before digging soil. Minimizes dirty nails.
Saw this on Reddit, use carabiners to link tree guards.
Definitely. I also put a strip of neon tape on my car key fobs. They’re all black and otherwise blend in to everything.
For trowels and hori knives I try to stab the ground when I’m done so they stick up. I still lose them.
Resist the temptation to conveniently put small tools in your back pockets while gardening; usually bad things then happen when sitting down to remove shoes when done.
Learn your plants when you move to a rural property! When I moved in, there were a few “milkweed “ on our hillside. I thought “that will be nice for the Monarch butterflies!.”
It was Dogbane and it takes an annoying amount of time to try to keep it from spreading all over, similarly, our new neighbors were telling me about the “ pretty wild morning glories”… I told them it was bindweed!
