I’ve been going crazy to find a single mango scion (bud wood) for sale in Europe, I know there is already a topic for this but it’s talking about scions in Europe, I’m talking about mango scions and other rare fruit trees specifically (mangoes, avocados and so on). I tried contacting a person in my area, that said he had mangoes, didn’t get a reply. Tried contacting nurseries in Spain and Italy, no luck. The closest I’ve got to getting a mango scion is in a Facebook group, but that person was from Australia, and shipping was just too expensive, plus I had to get the phytosanitary certificate, so I abandoned the idea. If you have mango trees, and would be kind to give me a cutting, please contact me, I can pay, or I can exchange with other scions that I have access to here, and maybe are rare in other sides of Europe. Also, if you know any nursery or person that sells this kind of stuff, here in Europe, please write it down below.
Maybe @Lech could point you in the right direction, what country are you located in. There are quite a few Central European fruit growers who grow tropicals who you can network with. I see your zone is 7b that’s why I mentioned Central Europe, good luck!
I’m in Romania, but thanks to relief, a kind of micro climate is formed in my region.
Ah. You have some apple varieties I’ d love to get. Domonesc, Inedit, Valery and another new one.
I could get you some, if you want, if you were even talking to me. I don’t even know if I need some certificate or something to ship to you. Also I sadly don’t think I can get you scions, just already grafted trees, that’s the only thing I can find in my local nurseries.
Sory I was quite busy …
Unfortunately, I’m a rookie if we talk about tropical fruits…
I know one person who’s growing Gomera, Palmer and some other grafted mangos in PL but they grow very, very slow compare to seedling trees (I doubt if he could sell any scions for next 3 years). Maybe when he finish his greenhouse this matter will change. I also heard that he don’t have free time for any trades currently…
I could recommend you to write a post on Tropical Fruit F. there are some grower from Eu.
As for avocados, some EFNEX member (facebook) grow mexican race plants like Del Rio, Wilma, Mexicola, Mexicola Grande, Brazos Bell and some which I’m not sure what race they are like Fantastic, Aravaipa, Steward, Lola/Lila ?, Negro. Just search in old posts.
As for other species idk what exactly are you looking for but frost sensitive or rare species (eg. Black sapote or Eugenia sp. ) are nearly impossible to get as scions, maybe on this forum which I mentioned earlier (I don’t tried).
Eugenia’s and rare similar tropicals I think the best bet is seeds. I know Marcos sells seeds to Europe
I got many of my tropicals and rare things as seeds from him
Thanks. I have tried to find scions in the various government breeder websites. I rely on a web translator and have found no scion sources yet.
I admire Romania’s attempts to update it’s orchards and varieties. I have Pionier and was hoping to add Generos and Delicious de Voina this year. As well as Patul.
All scab free easy growers. We need to wait and see what happens with our USDA. Who knows; APHIS might get taken down and international shipping becomes easier.
The only problem is that I don’t have scions, I can only get you a grafted sapling, because I don’t actually have those in my garden, but I have easy access to nurseries that sell those.
That is ok. No need to buy trees. Do you have Domensc?
What would you describe it as?
No, I’m ashamed to tell you but, I have no apple trees of Romanian origin in my garden. I actually only have one apple in my garden, it’s really old, it came with the house and I have no idea what variety it is. Also it’s called “domnesc”, lol, it would translate to something like king’s apple, since “domn” means the person that ruled the country in old Romanian. I’m shocked people want our apples, all of this time I was looking for Honey Crisp and Granny Smith and so on, not knowing that we might have gems in Romania. I can buy you the tree and sell it to you if you really want it, it’s pretty cheap here, maybe like 10€ and then shipping.
Well truthfully it is just me wanting Romanian apples. Though Maple Valley Orchards really likes Batul/ Patul. They say really good things about taste, storing and resistance.
Pionier won me over with it’s moderate and docile growth habit. Still no fruit yet; but it sounds promising. Sweet early apples are always welcome. Plus it was not even bothered by heat, wetness or our rough disease season last year.
Anyway that spurs me to look for other gems there. Especially reading reports apples in the general region of countries have many forms of scab resistance in them.
I’m still looking for mango scions, please!
Here is my variety wishlist, from most wanted to least wanted:
