I finally made a raccoon proof bait station that really works very inexpensive and easy to make .
All it takes is a short piece of 4 inch corrugated drainage pipe, a scrap 2 by 4 about 3 or 4 foot long, 3 woods screws . Secure the drainage pipe onto the 2 by 4 with a wood screw in each end. Use a long wood screw as the bait screw through the bottom of the two of four. Then cut a bait port right above the screw so you can place a small block of the poison on the screw, then make a small collar using a short piece of the corrugated pipe to cover the bait port. If you do not secure the rat poison on a bait screw they will just carry it off and use it in their nest. I found a chunk that I did not secure in my boot. Hope someone will find this useful.
Rat poisoning kills owls, wildlife and even pets by accident. So unfortunate. Some non agricultural locations are placing restrictions due to the issue. It’s tough
Can buy it a few places. It doesnt remove the rats but frankly where i live that is a pipe dream. I am not going to cure all of long island of rats. Ive been using it since may. I think its greatly reduced my rat pressure.
I do have to soak the sausage in peanut butter thats watered down for them to eat it. I use this + ratx. My dogs will eat a rat from time to time plus i dont want raptors to die if they eat them.
Several states have laws that restrict what may be sold or used for rat poison and require them to be placed in specific types of tamper-proof bait stations.
The issue still remains that there lazy ranchers and homeowners who do not use bait stations, instead scattering poisons around their property. This is stupid because they are poisoning some of the rat predators.
One of my neighbors was doing this and we had a flurry of dead animals all around including foxes and I believe a cat that winter. We spread the word of the harm at the community meeting and you would be surprised at how many of the newer homeowners didn’t think this could happen. They assumed that mammals would know the animal died from poison and wouldn’t eat it or that the smell of the poison wouldn’t appeal to them.
Most of the newer products work different than the traditional poisons. They mess up the digestive system which causes them to die. It doesn’t harm larger animals that may eat the rat because the concentration is not great enough to cause damage and it is designed for the weakness (inability to burp) in the rats digestive system. Just giving the advertised “science” of it, so not trying to argue with anyone about it.
I wouldnt say most, many are essentially very strong blood thinners. But yes you can find poison like the aforementioned ratx that causes dehydration etc
Straight poison is outlawed in a lot of places. The blood thinners your talking about are the other version. The ones I spoke of cause the digestive system to more or less explode because rats are unable to burp. Personally I’d rather have the straight poison, but no one sells it around here.
The ones your referring to may harm other animal. I didn’t look into it that much. The other one I spoke of is said not to hurt other animals. Each of those brands use different ingredients and kill by different methods. So I guess look into the brand you buy.
The rat poisons labeled “no secondary kill” will not do this. Digestion will neutralize the poison. However, these same poisons are in highly attractive bait such as apple or peanut butter flavor. If not placed in a tamper-proof bait station, mammals and birds are sure to eat them.
There is no permanent solution. It is just a management thing for me to keep them from nesting around my buildings and Camp and have them remain in the woods and fields on the back part of my property ,
