I am looking to get a few elderberry plants so if anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.
marge is a euro elder found growing wild in the U.S.s that is 30% more productive than most American elders and is self fertile. i have 4 grown from cuttings that should fruit for me this summer.
A friend of mine planted marge in 2022. Their one plant makes more elderberries than they can use so last summer I visited and filled five gallon bags with destemmed berries. If it had been harvested before the birds start eating the berries I’m sure we would have doubled that
Does Marge fruit in first year canes?
Or… Marge Millican grew it from an open pollinated seed of Haschberg
i thought she found it growing wild. must have read it wrong.
no. like other euros. on 2nd year canes which mine are this year. they are still small though. only 4ft.
I had gotten johns and Adams from Costco last year and they grew like crazy. John’s also got 1 flower but didn’t get any fruit. They are about 4-5 ft tall after first season.
Pics from last weekend of John. Should get a ton of stuff this year from them.
I might also add, they survived a mauling from bunnies (they ate off every shoot and leaf about 3 weeks after planting)
they grow crazy fast here as well with 0 care in my compacted stony clay. they don’t like competition from grass when establishing so it’s good to mulch them at least the 1st year. red elder grows wild everywhere here. only the birds and animals eat those.
I’m also following this Ethan. We have a lot of wild elderberry in my area, though not many on my property. I’ve transplanted one from my parent’s cow pasture and am planning to scout their property for superior fruit this season. I went ahead and ordered Marge. Going to see how it compares. I’m interested in superior varieties, but don’t want to order in something that turns out to be the same quality as a good wild bush.
