So this is the third year of my Rovada cordon. The first year I picked a good branch and cut off the others or down to one node. The second year I just made it to the top of the fence.
thinking of doing something like this on my Jeanne gooseberry. it likes to sprawl so tying it up makes sense. its also crazy productive of large tasty berries.
I also started a second cordon last year. I used Primus White for this one as it has the longest strings of berries of any currant I have seen. So only the second year. I thinking of doing a double cordon. I may remove one, but having a backup might work if one fails.
my primus is going to fruit for the 1st time for me. its only 2 years old and was a tiny thing when i planted it. heard good things on the taste. yours looks different than mine. mine has darker green leaves tinged in pink with darker bark. maybe different growing conditions?
Well I think it’s the only current with that pink or red tinge. Probably the same. I have not fed it and it has some aphids too. Hoping one day Mother Nature would help more with that. If I spray I kill the lady bugs. I have not fed it yet. And it’s almost in full shade. It’s between houses.
A view from the other side. At the bottom of the fence.
My Rovada cordon is about half done. Hopefully it will be full next year. It did have a nice crop of berries this year for a small plant.
My in ground bush produced enough to fill two gallon zip lock freezer bags. Berries are huge.
So easy to harvest. The two bags took about twenty minutes to harvest. Five minutes for this plant. I didn’t take any photos of the bush.
Rovada is an awesome currant. I don’t know of any other reds with such huge berries. Beautiful plant too. Use currants in crisps, crumbles, and tarts. A really nice fruit to cook with.
