Red Maples and Bees telling on each other

It is that time of year. The Red Maples are doing their bit keeping the bee populations going. I always listen out to see if I hear the bees swarming the Red Maples. Towering above our main Goat barn is a huge old Red Maple. As tall as our 80ft. pines. It is literally hard to talk over the bees swarming loudly.

But have you heard the tattle telling on your place?

Just one season here in Kentucky had maple blooms beginning January 20th as I recall, late 1980’s. But the species–silver maple. Reds a little later, often second half February
or even March here.
(For about a decade I kept a journal of time everything bloomed…it varied 30 days in some cases.)

Here is my experience:

From the warmest (earliest) year to the coolest (latest) year, the difference between the dates of the first flight [of codling moth] can be as much as five weeks and the same for the second flight.
