Does the damage happen to be facing the southwest? If so could very well be a frost crack.
It faces south.
I would guess that my guess is probably accurate then.
Doesn’t look like bark of a redbud to me.
To clarify, this tree is only about 1 inch in caliper.
OK…thanks…I see it’s a redbud. Based on the original photo…I’d say it’s likely to die.
