My third year redbud sapling has something taking off the bark. It’s small but looks more mechanical than something pathogenic or fungal.
What do you think?
Does the damage happen to be facing the southwest? If so could very well be a frost crack.
It faces south.
I would guess that my guess is probably accurate then.
Doesn’t look like bark of a redbud to me.
To clarify, this tree is only about 1 inch in caliper.

OK…thanks…I see it’s a redbud. Based on the original photo…I’d say it’s likely to die.
