Yup they have the clonals from time to time. I think he orders them far in advance and they come in randomly. Best to sign up for the newsletter. This one was from October 2023 lol.
Yeah I have been getting the newsletters for the 20% off coupons. That’s pretty pricey! I’ve been buying mine for $60, but quickly running out of space.
$60 is a good deal. I bought mine for $79 plus the 20% discount like 2 years ago I think. Prices have gone up quite a bit!
Which avocados did you buy and what rootstocks? I have several Dusas and one Zerala. I don’t see any difference between Dusa and Zerala, and now I see they’ve come out with a bunch of newer rootstocks too.
I only have Reed on Duke 7. The rest are the ones from the orange liners on the Zutano seedlings. From those I have 2 Gems, Reed, Sir Prize, 2 Sharwils, Don Gilogly, Stewart, and Pinkerton. They grow very similar in vigor aside from the Stewart which is at least twice as big. I bought that one in a 15g from Gary because it was so big. All mine are in pots.
I barerooted my Reed on Duke 7 because it was looking very chlorotic. There was quite a bit of wood used in the soil mixture of the clonals when I bought them. The bare rooting set it back quite a bit. I bought the Reed on Zutano last year in the orange liner and it has already outgrown the one on Clonal rootstock .
I’ve got a newer reed on zutano that I got because it was clearanced and it’s taller than all my other avocados, and I got another lamb on zutano that’s massive but has rarely flowered (currently holding 3 bb fruits). The variability of zutano rootstock is crazy.
The ones on Dusa flower very consistently. I gave a reed on Dusa to my cousin in Garden Grove, they’ve got a clay soil that is hell to dig through, but their tree flowers even more than mine.
Do you have pictures of your trees? is there maybe a thread for avocado tree pics we can use?
Yup, it’s surprising how much the rootstock varies in vigor. I saw one at Laguna Hills last year that just didn’t want to grow. It was such a runt lol. You have to be choose wisely on those little orange liners .
Nice to see Dusa doing well for you and your cousin. I hear that’s the one to get. I am pretty satisfied with my avocados now.
I made a video on my avocados and plan to do an update monthly, so probably easier just to watch it. I can take some pics if you want to see something specific. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0a6KeU6WYw
What would be the best rootstock for a Reed avocado tree? My Reed avocado hasn’t grown even an inch since last year; it may have grown just a few millimeters. I am planning to plant two more Reed trees in the future, and I am going to be more selective this time.
Watched two of your videos, you basically have perfect weather! Never went over 98f, geez. The caliper on the Stewart is crazy. Now makes me wonder if I should add a potted tree in between each of my in ground trees… they’re spaced 10ft apart and not really using all that space.
If you’re able to get clonal, Dusa seems to be consistently good. The one to avoid there is probably Toro Canyon from what people on the Facebook group say.
If Zutano seedling rootstock, it’s just luck of the draw. Have you had soil tests done? Do you mulch heavily?
I followed a lot of advice online for avocados when I was new (mounding 8 inches, adding gypsum, etc.)… and it turned out to be unnecessary for my soil. My trees grew slowly and I replanted them at grade 8 months later. I even planted my bacon on Dusa 3 inches under grade by accident and it was fine.
Haha thanks!. You know what’s crazy was the year before I got snow for like 20 mins. I didn’t check temps back then but all the plants were fine. First time seeing snow in Socal aside from at the mountains.
I didn’t expect there would be snow in Southern California. That must be a rare event. I am from Northern California, and still new to here.
Yea I grew up here and my first time experiencing it. It was very strange. Later on it was sunny and it all melted away.
Vista area or further inland?
Not that far south. Around Pomona / North OC area.
@Plants
The cost of a fruit tree is just the down payment. I never select plants based on price.
I think I remember that year, I had a runty sharwil and it hit 28f, killed the sharwil overnight. Lucas, I think we live near each other, I’m in your area that you’ve described.
Yeah this is a great price for Zutano seedlings, but Lucas and I were referencing Brokaw clonals which can command a higher price.
I do wish I had waited and bought Costco trees, as they are bigger for almost half the price. Never seen a Reed or pinkerton at my Costco though.
