Gardeners are creative people! We make things out of junk, but from time to time make junk out of things too. I think it will be interesting to see people ideas of the projects based on the things we already have or getting for free.
My post will be from âNow whatâ category. I got hold of a lot of terracotta pieces whose original name was wine rack.
I saw them on Craigâs List and didnât finalize usage plan before I sent my DH to pick them up. I thought, they would make wonderful irrigation system, but⌠if they have bottoms. They donât. Can anybody give me an idea what I can use to glue to the terracotta that will hold water ? The first simplest option is greenhouse film. But is there a glue that will stick the film to terracotta? Any other ideas to use these things other then making a planter or border?
Iâd glue a tile (with silicon) to one side and use it as an olla. Thatâs what I do with all ceramic pots that I can get. BUT the firing temperature can be a problem in freezing weather. If they were fired at high temp, theyâre safe, but if not (they will soak up water too quickly and have more of a clang than a ring when hit), they will break into terracotta chips when frozen.
Yes, I thought about breaking. I may take them out of the soil before winter and store in dry place. About olla. Does it really wet soil or the plants just grow roots around it to take water? I saw a video, where the pot was taken out of the soil and there was a cocoon of roots left in the hole. The reason I am asking, I want to try it for carrots, place the tubes between the rows. The tube is about 4 inches wide, the space between rows 8 inches. Will it work?
