Reviewing Nurseries

Boyer Nursery, Century Farm Orchard, White Oak Nursery ( great trees), Trees of Antiquity. All of which I have had great luck with and great looking nursery stock.

what happened to the tree?

This winter everything in that pot died over winter. It was not just Rock Bridge Nursery stuff. It was the pecan on got from Rock Bridge Nursery, a Ukrainian cranberry bush and a Chinese Mormon Apricot that died. The tree in a pot next to it the hazelnut survived but the nectarine died so I am guessing it was just too much shade for it to collect energy for the winter. Either that or the pine tree above it blocked the snow which made it impossible for the plants to get watered during winter. Like I mentioned the persimmon lived.

This guy does pretty well just on FB without a website…
PapaPawpaws on FB

JT-02 and many others available for $25 each… also many hard to find pawpaws.

FYI - I placed an order with Raintree and wanted to place another order about three weeks after that. I wrote in via email with what I wanted and they added it into the order.

Just received everything this past Wednesday, all in the same box.

It’s a little extra work, but in my limited experience, seems like you can get orders combined with Raintree.

Speaking of Raintree, I was impressed with the size and roots of the bare root plants I bought, especially the tree. The container plants in the order weren’t as impressive. They were pricey for the size and didn’t look as healthy as the container plants I received from Restoring Eden.

Really want to try the hanging basket blueberry varieties from Bushel and Berry that Raintree and unfortunately very few others offer, but for one of each of the two varieties from Raintree it was close to $100 total with shipping and taxes which is more than I’m willing to spend on plants like that.

I have seen 1ft/1gal blackberry and raspberry decades old plant varieties from reputable stores online and can’t believe people are actually willing to pay $70 and up for them, not including shipping or taxes. I can buy a bare root for approximately $10, pot it up and in a couple months it will be the same size. :man_shrugging:

Recently placed my first order from Scenic Hill Nursery and while I did pay $18 for a small Honey Queen raspberry plant, the price included 2nd day air shipping which was a pleasant surprise when I was expecting for it to be delivered in about a week after it was shipped.

Well, at least the shipping is somewhat reasonable. Ha.

I purchased a ton of stuff from Raintree recently so I thought I’d share my experience. The tldr; is that it’s generally positive, has space for improvement, customer service was good.

I’ve had a pretty big landscaping / gardening project over the last year and purchased a few thousand dollars of trees / shrubs / groundcover from a handful of nurseries, primarily from Raintree. I made an initial small purchase and other nurseries (don’t remember which ones but can lookup in the email) sent me healthy plants but they were literal whips. Raintree sent me what looked like mature trees so I made my main order from them.

The plants were all healthy and good looking but there was pretty big variation, for both trees and shrubs, even within literally the same variety. To give a concrete example - I purchased 3 gooseberries and 2 of them were amazing and even set some berries even though I planted them a few months ago. The 3rd one was absolutely tiny, just a few inches above the root. Not a huge deal for shrubs but a bigger deal for trees and in retrospect I definitely wish I contacted them and asked if I can come and handpick the actual items (although I don’t know if they would allow it).

As for the customer service, I had good experience. One tree came damaged beyond the “I can probably salvage this” level. They sent a video how I can still try to salvage it but also sent me a replacement tree.

I’ve networked with him, he seems like a good one. You can take a guess who one of his friends /mentors is, living in Illinois.

I grabbed some from Tractor Supply. I’ve seen them at Sam’s Club too.

I have seen bushel and berry plants at Home Depot. They appear to be everywhere.

I was out today and noticed green on the pecan tree from Rock Bridges Nursery so I guess it was just delayed from the shade. In fact it seems to be the only thing in the planter to survive so far.

Tractor Supply does sell several Bushel and Berry varieties but I have yet to see either Midnight or Sapphire Cascade varieties.

What is so special about midnight or sapphire cascade? To edit I guess they are designed for hanging basket but they appear to only be hardy to zone 5 and I would guess they still need acidic soil. If they are in a hanging basket and in zone 5 I would almost want to be in a zone 6 climate or a zone 7 climate to compensate for cold tolerance.

At least I can say that in zone 6A with the newer growing zones and 5b with the older growing zones I can say with the pots in ground that have a physical barrier and not grow bags even plants in zone 3 have had a zero percent survival rate over winter. In grow bags the plants survive but that is likely because of the fact that it is air based and it likely functions the same as snow being over it. At least my theory is the grow bags the snow freezes the snow giving the same effect as the dirt being frozen in ground. The only one that is somewhat plastic based that has a survival rate is my hydroponics ones which again have holes on the bottom of the planters and is supposed to be used in hydroponics similar to grow bags. My worry would be the planter would not be in a similar situation.

Seeing these bagged fruit trees for sale all over FB… anyone know which nursery these come from?

Not sure what to do next with Isons.

Im at 7 months since i ordered. 2 months of not answering the phones or emails.

Their website says that shipping season has ended.

Do i just take the hit of theft and fraud? I paid via debit card 10/23… so no way to file a claim.

Social media reach out? There has to be a way to contact them.

Their fb has no way of messaging. I have well over 25 emails and have tried both numbers well over 200 times. So i gotta assume its intentional.

Tyty has reimbursed me. Willis also reimbursed me. Both sent me items that were not true to name and they both made it right.

Both of those outfits were very responsive by phone and email.

So at this point to me Isons is the worst of the worst. And my first time of being defrauded. This was my first order with them ever and no bad blood or anything to cause it. I ordered things that were in stock and in the Fall to ensure a top spot in Spring shipping.

The only time someone answered was 2 months ago and they said that it might ship that week.

Total blackout since then.

It makes no sense to me.
