My last attempt to ripen figs in a bag with apples. These are still on the potted plants when I brought them in. Most of them were dropping at this point but they tasted bland. So, I thought I tried something different this time. I put them all in a ziploc bag with apples and see what happened. I waited until there is a little crack at the eyes and wow, they are sweet!!! Did anyone else try this?
Which variety are these figs?

Did you have 1 as a control? In other words did you keep 1 out of the bag to compare?
Yes, I actually have about 6 outside (on the counter)and they tasted bland. Maybe, it was just a coincidence but they tend to crack at the eyes faster with the apples inside the bag. Who knows, I am trying different things…I’ll do it again next year to see if this can be repeated.
Don’t forget that these are dropped figs from pots that I brought in due to late figs. I didn’t have brown paper bags so I used ziploc bags. I don’t like to pickle them like cucumbers so I tried these as last resort before I throw them out in the trash bins. Maybe, someone can try and we can share notes in this. I am just as shocked to find out that they tasted sweet, out of the bag but as I know, this can be a fluke
This website has some insight into ripening green figs:

They state that figs that have begun to ripen can be fully ripened by enclosing the figs in a bag with a banana (or other fruit that gives off ethylene gas, like apples). They also provide an interesting recipe for those figs that refuse to ripen.
I’ll have to try it, every time I give the fig another day to ripen the squirrels and birds get them so I end up picking early.
