I know this is a tough category as pears are finicky, but when will my Seckels and Flemish Beauty pears ripen? I picked them too early last year and they rotted on my kitchen table. Thanks.
So hard to say! I grow both of those and they aren’t ready yet, but when I test them I look for a slight give upon pinching the neck, as well as having them come off in my hand when I lift them to horizontal. There might be a very slight translucency in the neck- but I have to use my imagination to see it!
Last years pears that rotted on the table? I wonder if they wanted a chill period before being left to ripen on the table. I suspect this chill thing is cumulative, and very localized, but I’m just speculating.
I hope things are going well for you-
:-)M
hello how are you
Mark thanks for the info! They are still very hard but are turning color . Things are going, like pushing a boulder up a mountain.
ok how are you today
Last year I and others picked a whole lot of pears at the NCGR site near Corvallis and we put them in a walk-in cooler on site and left them for about a month, as I recall. Pick-day was Sept. 9. There must have been over 100 varieties involved and I know different pears ripen at different times and do best with different chill times so that must have been a good average chill time. We did a quick scan of the trees again when it was time to take the original pickin’s out of the cooler in case there were any late-ripening pears that were still on the trees but ready to eat…the tasting day was just a few days later.
