Root barrier for brambles

I ordered some blackberries that should be coming this spring. I’d like to plant them next to my raspberries, but don’t want everything to become a big intermixed mess. Will a root barrier work to put in between the two rows to keep them separate? Any recommendations on brands, or how deep I should go with them?

I’ve looked into getting a plastic bamboo barrier, the thinner ones. I don’t need the high-power bamboo control, but I need to stop suckers coming up in the neighbor’s yard. They’ll get sprayed and I don’t want that to kill my main plants. I think the thinner barrier comes in 18 inch, which seems more than adequate?

Yeah I would think that’d be enough. I just don’t know how long they last? Will it hold up to freeze and thawing? Obviously that’s not an issue where bamboo is grown. I’ve also been thinking about just getting some wide aluminum flashing. It might actually even be cheaper.

If you belong to the Raspberry and Blackberry groups on FB you can do searches there of people asking the same things… really its almost impossible. Some people have found runners of raspberries that went under concrete and thru plastic.

If your space is limited… i advise either wicking tubs or grow bags and just keep them above ground if spreading is a concern.

i bought a small huskee front tined tiller from TSC for like $250. i run it in between the rows to chop up the sprouts a couple times in early summer. works great and i till in amendments at the same time.
