Saskatoon attack

I planted a sixty foot row of juneberries which have finally reached the bearing stage and were truly loaded down this year. I have never tasted one but liked the description and took a chance. They must be good because birds, mostly robins , cleaned them out to the last berry while ,so far, leaving by blueberries unmolested.

i have several bushes but haven’t got a berry yet. have them planted on a windy hill on the east side so maybe too windy and dry for them there. how old before you got fruit?

It took about five years of them surviving but not growing before they suddenly took off. They are still only about two feet tall at most.but there are suckers everywhere…

mine were 3ft. when i planted them. they’ve grown some but not much in the last 2 yrs. starting to send out some suckers now. I’m in zone 3b so quite a difference in between n. maine and n. texas!

Mine were originally in two inch pots. It took them a long time to establish. Seems like Maine should be more like their Canada home.

I’ve developed a strong dislike for robins

We have had bad luck with robins and service (saskatoon) berries some years. Pretty strange really because most years we never see a robin. Fortunately they have been absent the last few years.

On a good year, the juneberries here are very sweet and great, I can see why the birds like them. A bit less flavor than blueberries, but still very nice.

Growing up in ND we had them growing along the river. The berries were smaller than blueberries but I felt the flavor was superior. We had tame bushes by the house and the robins were a real problem.

I’ve seen them in a few places wild around here but didn’t realize what they were back then.

Robins will steal all my berries if I dont net them. Ive ‘heard’ that rat traps work well to thin the heard if you feel so inclined. The old fashioned wooden ones with the metal spring loaded bar…
