Seckel Pear

Hmmm. Tough to say. Hopefully you have better luck soon. Somehow the flowers arent getting pollinated.

Yes, that is not uncommon. I have one doing it this year myself after a monster crop last year. If your getting a crop then there is already a pollinator somewhere near. I wouldn’t worry about it. It should do better next year. Blossom blast will also limit crop production. I’ve been hit with that in years past.

Summercrisp is a small pear that ripens very early, isn’t that great for fresh eating and mostly stays green until it gets yellow and mushy on the tree. It does not grow in clusters, though. It makes great pear crisp and freezes well.

What do you mean by blossom blast?

Also something I noticed this year is that some of the tiny fruitlets on the seckle have an orange rough area on the skin.

Not sure on the orange. Would need a pic for that one. Could just be russet.

Thanks for the link. I’ll read up.

I also did some more research about the orange marks and it appears that the likely culprit is Pacific Coast Pear Rust.

I’ll take a pic of it tomorrow.

How close are Worden Seckel and the regular Seckel? I saw both at my winter grafting event and grafted the Worden one. Looks slightly bigger than Seckel. Wasnt sure if any other differences.

Thats pretty accurate. Worden has slightly less seckle flavor but it is a larger fruit. I lost it to fireblight.

Orange and rough sounds like rust.

Do any of your pears get that? If so, what treatment protocols if any do you use?

I watched it distort several of the seckle fruitlets. It didn’t set all that much fruit this year, so losing half of what it did set made a noticeable impact.

The pear tree I have with 3 cultivars didn’t have a single fruit damaged. The old comic tree has at least a couple hundred fruit and so far I’ve only found one that is misshapen and orange like the seckles. Of course with so many fruit on that tree it is possible to miss some when scanning the branches.

Rust is fungal. Yes, I’ve gotten a little the last few years, usually just leaf spotting, not on the fruit.

Here’s a thread about pear rust:

They are excellent pears. I had a decent crop last year in its 3rd summer in the ground. Was kind of bummed about not many fruit setting this year. I figure the tree is young still and many great crops are still to come. I canned them whole in syrup with vanilla and spices. I’m still eating them as summer approaches and have quite a few jars left.

When I was a little kid, I always loved to eat pears from my great grandpa’s tree. I didn’t know what kind that were. I always called them sugar pears because they were so sweet and good. They were small but good.

I called a cousin today, to see if I could get some scion wood from that old tree but was told that all the trees are gonna, the whole farm was sold and a new housing development is moving in.
She told me that Bomp always called that pear tree a sickle pear, small and sweet. I’m guessing that she was likely refund to seckel?

It has always been on my short list, but I didn’t know what it was.

Seckel doesn’t have near the resistance of Potomac, Blakes Pride, Warren or Magness in my orchard.

Another problem is finding the real seckle. If you need some next year let me know.

Seckle, as you can see, is disease free. I have had many people who discovered their seckle wasn’t seckle after reviewing our threads. Seckle always grows in clusters of fruit. See @warmwxrules photos in a post above are perfect seckle photos.

In contrast these pears below are magness. Pears that grow individuaĺy will never be seckle.
