Shin-Li

Going into march and these things are still in near perfect condition. I’m pretty impressed, most of the other varieties gave up a while back.

That looks juicy and delicious! What does it taste like? Im upset when my european pears do not ooze like that when cut and everytime they look like that they are delicious.

They are good. Worth planting. That thing was dripping juice when I cut it. I like euros better and a good one will be juicier than that.

I am looking forward to trying a fresh homegrown asian pear (or atleast ripe), I have only eaten store bought ones and that has been a wet cardboard experience for me so far.

Once again my old reliable Shin Li has a monster crop. When it comes to spray free perfect fruit that stores well this pear is in top tier. Not my favorite asian, but how can you complain with such ease.

They’ve been very good this year. My tree has a huge crop.

I am amazed that that branch does not break by that much weight. I have two Shin Li fruiting for the first time this year. They are almost as big as Korean Giant.

When do you pick yours?

I’ve been picking them for a couple weeks already. The bottoms will turn a creamy color when they’re ready. I pick them with Korean Giant.

Thanks. I should have picked Korean Giant this weekend but squirrel pressure forced me to pick it a week earlier but they have tasted good.

I probably will let Shin Li hang until I see a pale color at the bottom.

Robert,
I picked my Shin Li in early Nov, 2023. I just ate it yesterday, 7/26/24. Nine months in a fridge. Near perfect condition. The best Asian pear keeper.

@PharmerDrewee Thank you recommended this variety. I strongly recommend it to those who like a good, large Asian pear that can keep this long.

I have a few more on the tree this year. I will see how long I can keep them after picking. Hope animals do not steal them first.

Wow, thats a long time:)

Two I missed hiding

Not only it keep for a long time, the taste, the texture, the juiciness was still there. I bet it will still be good if I waited a couple more weeks. Much longer keeper than Korean Giant, Hosui, Kosui, 20th Century in my fridge.

Not the best pear out there, but it’s reliable and they hang on the tree forever. Makes a great pear sauce. Looks like yours got pretty yellow during the storage.

Not the best tasting pears when compared to Korean Giant, Hosui or Kosui in season. Shin Ki’s texture is coarser than them.

But Ahin Li jpkeeping its quality 9 months after picking? It beats any store-bought pears and more. In fact. I like it more than freshly oicked 20th century or a few others I grow.

Can’t beat the 9 months in storage. I notice that Shin li is a heavy producer here too.

My small graft produced two large fruit last year. This year the graft has grown more and produces half a dozen fruit. It is indeed precocious and productive.

After my tree got older I noticed some of the fruit started looking Euro shaped. Like some of the Chinese pears. Maybe a quarter of them get that Euro shape with the rest being round. Birds, insects, nothing touches the fruit. They come out perfect every year.

20th Century? I never could figure why it is so popular. Mine died, but I’m not missing it.
