Shroyer's Sunset (H.E.S. 25021)

Shroyer’s Sunset (H.E.S. 25021) has been a healthy pear in my experience but it has not fruited yet. Anyone have this pear producing yet? This one was a favorite of the home orchard society.

" PI 541201 - COR - Pyrus communis shroyers sunset
Oregon’s Home Orchard Society (HOS) voted at their November 2018 annual meeting to name a favorite pear selection in memory of long-time member Jerald (Jerry) Shroyer who was born on November 24, 1932 and died on November 9, 2017. Shroyer’s Sunset (PI 541201) is a delicious little pear that was among hundreds of varieties transferred to the USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository when it opened in 1981 from Oregon State University’s Experiment Station near Medford. Little is known about this un-named selection from Canada, other than it was from a cross made in 1925 by O.A. Bradt in Ontario. The catalog at the Southern Oregon Experiment Station listed this pear as HES 25021, the letters presumably an acronym for ‘Harrow Experiment Station’. There are no records to link this selection to a particular pedigree, however the fruit resembles the cultivar Seckel in size, shape and coloration, although it tends to be slightly larger than ‘Seckel’. The fruit ripens in mid-September, and like ‘Seckel’ has superb texture and flavor. HES 25051, now Shroyer’s Sunset, has been a favorite of HOS members during their annual visits to the USDA Pear Repository in Corvallis."

I remember attending that meeting and voting for that varietal name, out of the several name choices offered.

I voted for it too, although somehow either failed to grab or use a scion apparently.

Now I want it mainly to remind me of Jerry.

FYI per the Montanari paper, one of the parents of Shoyer’s Sunset is Flemish Beauty (aka Comtesse de Paris); the other remains unknown

I loved the little taste I had of the Shoyer’s Sunset and voted for it and for the name. I bought a tree grafted by the HOS volunteers because I didn’t want to risk failure. It is a pretty tree now, and this is the first year it fruited. I thinned out the fruit, but most fell and some grew for a while and developed cracks. Yesterday, I found the remaining pear on the ground, but it doesn’t seem bruised so I’m holding on to it until ripe. It may be ripe now, but it seems a little too firm yet. (Advise on this is welcome.) All three of my pear trees have been plagued with cedar rust, and I’m struggling to keep them healthy, but Tonya advised me about fertilizing, and I’ll do a thorough spray routine in spring. This year, it rained every day, almost, so I missed the spraying part a couple of times. Anyway, here she is, my only pear, so far.

This is the Shroyer’s Sunset I grew, for size:

That’s a nice looking pear. I bet its good while still relatively firm, When the neck near the stem has some give I’d probably try it then.

I just grafted it this spring. Whether its good or not, I need the pear that honors Jerry Shroyer’s memory.

This year seemed the worst for me with fruit cracking and by far for rust. Hopefully its somewhat of an anomaly and future years will be better.

Thanks for the advice. That means we may be trying this little delicacy tonight!

My tree is now about 8 ft tall, and I haven’t pruned heavily so far, because there wasn’t enough of it to shape from. However, if I am pruning this winter, do you want a scion or two?

Thank you for the offer, but my grafts grew great. Barring calamity, I should be set.

Hopefully I didn’t lead you astray on the timing. I have Seckel that hasn’t born heavily yet and its a bit of a guessing game for me. I think Shroyer Sunset is supposed to be similar to Seckel.

You didn’t lead me astray - the color looks like it’s ripe but it’s very, very firm - even at the neck. So I’m watching (and feeling ) it until I’m willing to take that chance. More difficult because it’s the only, and the first, pear from this tree. I SO want to gift it to people in Jerry’s honor. Maybe, with careful husbandry, next year will bring abundance. I look forward to hearing how your grafts do with fruiting.

Reminds me of the old witch pinching children’s fingers to see if they were fat enough, pinching pears instead.

Interesting. Shroyer’s Sunset is one of the many dozens of pear scions ASN sent.

Doubt anyone opts to graft it given the chill hours.

How was the pear?

Mine was dead this year.

sorry to hear that. What was the cause?

I dont know to be honest. Most likely an underground attack by voles on the roots i think. There were 2 large apples nearby that had the same fate. I will likely use something else lless appealing like jujube in that spot. The top was crisp already so it must have happened in the fall.

The one pear that wasn’t cracked was like a piece of candy!! This year, the tree is filled with blossoms, so perhaps there will be more that survive. Last year, there were about 20, but between early fruit drop and us culling where they were crowded, only about 5 went the whole season. 4 of those were cracked. I still have a whole lot to learn. I’m hoping to get some control over the cedar rust issue, which isn’t helping.
