Silly, perhaps absolutely stupid question?

Let’s say someone had a apple that he or she really liked, that apple had a stem attached as many do. This particular person had no idea what the apple variety was, but really, really liked it. He, or she, just so happened to be a amatuer grafter. This person had a number of these apples and they had been stored well and the stems were still very pliable and containing healthy green tissue when scraped.

WOULD that person be able to graft a piece of that stem wood in order to replicate that apple?

I would think “yes” (although dicey), as it should contain the genetic DNA for the given variety, but I’m not so sure.

Now, of course, one would have to be careful and mindful of patents and whatnot in order to operate within the confines of the law…no doubt.
BUT…is it possible…is it likely to succeed and would it succeed, given it was executed properly?

Not really sure how that wold be possible considering the stem has no buds on it. Sure it would carry the fruits DNA but you need a bud for a graft to work.

Right…so would there ever be any chance of bud development…that is if one was fortunate enough to get a take in the first place? If it did grow, and at some point developed any shoot at all, wouldt it then at some point develop buds?

It’s obviously not ideal, and given different circumstances certainly not even advisable…but could it work? I guess since I’ve not witnessed growth take place from anything other than a bud, this would be a no-go.
Seems like there should be a way or method to make this work, but then again things often aren’t as they seem they should be. lol

I don’t think it could work unless you were lucky enough to have some stem from the apple tree still attached to the fruit (I mean WOODY stem, not the little stem that holds the apple to the branch), and that woody stem would have to contain a live bud that you could use for bud grafting. I don’t think even tissue culture would work because it normally uses buds, stem tips or root tips, ie parts of the plant with very active cell division.

yeah…I’m thinking the same…another crazy idea shot to Hell.
