Small lot growers

I just got four more cattle panels this week.

That’s great. I love removing trees- it seems to free up spaces and suddenly so many opportunities open up!

@kelbot theyre addictive to get and play with, right? It’s just my second year getting them, but I feel the need to always have an extra on hand for ideas.

I’d say cattle panel trellis ought to be considered essential for small lot growers :slightly_smiling_face:.

Looks like a lot of people growing in front yards. I wasn’t sure if this was a good idea in the past. Don’t do it currently (other than serviceberries) because deer are out of control and will demolish most fruit trees.

I may be moving soon. Probably to an area with fewer deer. Lots of houses seem to have more front than back yard and I’m not sure what the rules for fences are Anyone have any issues with people stealing their fruit ?

People stealing my fruit is something I worry about, but not a lot. I have seen video of a group of people getting out of a van picking the tree clean in a minute and driving off with the spoils…

That being said, I see a lot of fruit trees in the area with fruit never seemingly picked.

I think overall it will be okay.

I’m sure it depends on the neighborhood, and I might be worried if I was city center and highly trafficked. My neighborhood is just walked by neighbors and it’s not a worry. My main concerns are mice, voles, deer late spring and late summer/fall and a few little kids that run through my gardens. One was stealing all my fiberglass driveway/street markers over the course of months…both my husband and I caught him in the act twice and he still destroyed 9/20 stealing or throwing them into the street to be run over and destroyed. I followed him one day to figure out the house and talked with the mom in the evening to shut that down- and find 2 of them.

Sliding door trellis. Just finished put concrete in the bags. Picture is pre-concrete and further away from the house. Naturally, I thought of a much better way to do this right after we started. I think 50lbs of concrete per post is really overkill now that I see and feel it. Maybe storms will prove me wrong. For my next deck door…I wish I had used 2g pots and then placed those in 5g containers filling the outer ring with soil and using that to plant runner beans. Back to reality, the top 2ā€ of each bag will be filled with painted seashell as my kids love doing that and we never know what to do with them. Im sure I’ll hate it less once it’s covered in plants

*this is made from 1/2ā€ metal conduit, not pvc. I just spray painted it white. Those cross piece 90 degree connectors were a total pain!!

That’s a cool project! I’m sure it will look great when vines engulf it.

We have a yard with a lot of trees, so finding a place to plant any kind of fruit or veggie or flower that needs a lot of sunshine is hard. There is a small area in the back yard that gets sun most of the day, and this is where most of the tomatoes are at. I mostly just plant gardening veggies in containers anymore, and stat them inside in the aerogardens first.
My black raspberries seem to do fine in the shade, and I am slowly moving some of the new starts into areas that are shady, so I have more places to grow the raspberries.

Check the laws in your location; In mine, it’s my understanding that any part of a plant growing over your side of the property line becomes your property and you can do what you choose with it. If there was some accidental broad spectrum herbicide spray applied on your side that happened to affect all the invasive honesuckle and clear some room for the plants you want, that would be unfortunate.

my method for stopping people from stealing is to donate freely to neighbors and local people in need. i grow too much fruit for 2 people anyway, and vegetables too. i am adding a comment box for people to place ā€œordersā€ for pickup of fruit. I dont mind some being taken as long as theyre not ruining the plants or picking underripe fruit. i hate that. Almost all my stuff is in the front yard. i also have cameras

I love this! We were out applying herbicide this weekend because of the poison ivy that grows in there and into my gardens and definitely got liberal with it.

What are those large trays you have the figs on?

they are so i can bottom water! I have a plug i put in it and it can fill with water then unplug and drain.

I believe its a giant tray from garland.

Yes I meant where did you get it/what was it’s sold purpose. I’ve never seen any that big and was looking at all possibilities last fall. Is Garland a store near you?

no its a brand. its purpose is i think for chemical storage and/or storing many nursery pots
