any trays would work that you can drill a hole in and add a stopper (if you prefer bottom watering like i do )
I thought I designed the deck too large relative to the backyard for the first two years living here. Yet, Iāve managed to fill it upā¦Iāll update picture once itās really set for the season and hopefully the trellis is disappearing under greenery. still a bunch of curcubit starts to be planted out and things in there and this photo was before I up potted 4 citrus. Last year was the first I grew anything on the deck and I tended to move things around often. 0 to 100 is how I rollā¦I was proud of myself for not having a single apple, plum, cherry, pomegranate or cuttings container on the deck this year as thatās what filled it last year. And yet, still a net gain.
Made my husband get the fancy umbrella to shade the strawberries and us because it can soar well over 120 on there and fry your feet. Butā¦between the hells bane mosquitos and million plants (add too cold spring), we rarely use it. My favorite is when the kids got some dress up safari outfits and snooped around like they were in a forest. Yet, not managing to obscure much of the next 3 houses view! One day, I wonāt be able to throw a stick and hit 3 houses away. One day.
4/5 Trellis projects completeā¦still havenāt found time to start the bamboo foundation trellis. Basic double panel tunnel and my space saving cucumber trellis. The cucumber trellis is bolted with the panels of the raised bed (we bought longer bolts). I wove a pattern of jute over it today.
Nevermind the virtually bare panels in the veg gardensā¦furious about the house sparrows devastating my sweet peas so early this year. There should be 4ā of peas covering all my panels by now and been harvesting for a week at least. We had more peas than we could pick or giveaway last year and my youngest kid was in heaven- and me- theyāre our favorite. For 10 years, Iāve never not been able to grow peas. They also destroyed all the ones I planted on 20ā of my orchard fence. But, the little aholes didnāt touch a single one of the densely growing cover crop peas on my pumpkin row where they were welcome to eat. Just evil.
I have to brainstorm further about how to thwart or minimize this problem next year. the stupid things arenāt afraid of virtually anything, including me.
@Eme wow, your projects and garden are looking great!
I am feeling very behind this year. I have only started some peppers and onions. Going to try to do some squash, sorghum, and corn today.
Got where the chickens had been for winter tilled last night. Still have many boxes to fill for growing things!
I fee behind too! Thanks for the kind words of the partial garden picture ![]()
Whatās your chicken set up on your lot? Iām still trying to figure out ducks for next year. Canāt come up with a āgoodā (works with space and will look nice) daytime protection plan. And, your veggies are going to do amazing in that soil!
Looking very nice Eme your garden us so tidy.
Hereās my Seminole pumpkin vine starting to takeover. Iām training it to run along the borders and I might get it to run up and over one side of the jungle gym.
your cucurbits look so nice. Atre you growing them to harvest squash vine borers for fishing bate. LOL
Beautiful! I love that you edged the play space. Seminole is c. moschata, right? Squash borer shouldnāt be an issue. Living the dream
Vine borers donāt seem to bother the Seminole pumpkin. I grew them last year and only got four pumpkins because of root knot nematodes. This year I planted them in a different part of the yard and it seems to be doing much better.
i think thats moschata which is basically immune. c. pepo is the problem
Need some people focusing on either parthenocarpic zucchini and pattypan (which there are a fewā¦) or some bush moschata for summer squash. i just dont want the big vines.
Yes, they do get very big and long. It would be a bit of work trying to keep it under control if you didnāt want it to sprawl everywhere. I just let it go crazy and hack off any vines that take off in directions I donāt want it to go.
Iāve looked into all the fowl imaginable for my small lot and have decided quail are the only thing Iāll be able to deal with.
no room for a chicken pen, ducks need mess space and a water area, guinea hens are too loud and the neighbors said please no.
Unfortunately ducks are a no for me where I live. I canāt have them far enough away from the house to get away from the diarrhea spray they leave. D:
I have entertained the idea of quail, but i would need to make fort Knox cage.
hardware cloth box, basically. we have a kitchen window that leads to the back porch, i was thinking of building a frame by that to catch cool/heat leakage, and then building a frame for deep litter underneath it that i can toss
