It’s been a few years since I last did a “year in pictures.” So, since it seems like it’s going to be a productive one with lots of new varieties and some of my own seedlings, I figured I’d post what I’ve got.
Berries kick it off.

A good mulberry mix this weekend. We’ve had a lot of rain this year, and both Oscar and Easter Egg had great flavor that wasn’t washed out at all. Easter Egg has a bit of a raspberry flavor that’s different than the other mulberries I grow.
Also a photo of Pineapple Crush (with some regular strawberries as a size comparison). Excellent flavor.
Early raspberries starting. Josephine is probably the best that I grow. Even its floricane crop is excellent.
Lawson Dawson lives up to the hype.
Kiwi Gold was the best of this raspberry mix.
Fingers crossed that a few Bozhy Dar and Dar Sofiy hold on through maturity this year.
Fruits of the week.
Two caveats: 1) I’m 99% sure the first picture is Adirondack Gold, but it could be a seedling manchurian apricot. 2) The picture of Osage could be Ponca.
Adirondack Gold is good not great. But since no other apricots survive for me, I’ll take what I can get.
Not what I expected a seedling of Black Velvet to look like. Flavor is okay. Nothing special.
Naidyonisch has proven to be a great plum in my location. Early, tasty, no black knot. It’s not the most richly flavored plum. But it tends to be the first to ripen, and that makes it a keeper.
SdP has very good flavor with lots of depth. My main tree of SdP won’t ripen for another week. These are from a branch on a multi-graft tree that’s in a warmer microclimate.
@SMC_zone6 , beautiful fruit. Is there anything you grow that’s not perfect? No bugs, fungus, birds, squirrels, raccoons like the ones I share my fruit with?
Ha! I’ll try to mix in some pictures of ugly fruit. I’ve got plenty.
@SMC_zone6 … nice looking fruit.
I have Oscar and Lawson Dawson… my LD bore fruit this year… at 1 year old… and it was quite good.
We had a late frost that toasted the leaves and first flush of fruit on all my mulberries except LD.
My Oscar in year 2… produced no fruit because if that. Hope I get to try some Oscar next year.
I know LD is a good tasting mulberry… even my first year fruit were quite good. I have heard that Oscar taste similar to a good blackberry, good flavor sweet and tart.
Just wondering about your take on the flavor of both LD and Oscar… are they similar or different in some way.
They are both good looking berries.
Thanks
TNHunter
I haven’t done a side by side comparison of the two. But in separate tastings, LD and Oscar were the best of the bunch. Sometimes mulberries can have what I’d call a “thin” flavor compared to blackberries and other fruits. But LD and Oscar have a distinct richness that sets them apart. My dad described Oscar as having a “smoky” quality that he really enjoyed.
What are your almonds looking like?
They never set much fruit. So I don’t pay them a lot of attention. I’ll try to take a look this weekend to see how they’re shaping up.
I tried hard to thin my Snack Time well. Then, just before they ripen, birds started pecking them and squirrels have been stealing them. I never win.
The local wildlife’s got no respect.
I always look forward to seeing your reports @SMC_zone6, both for the amazing photos and for the candid reviews. What a wonderful collection with more to come, I’m sure. I need to up my mulberry game.
I have not picked my potted Spring Snow yet. The tree almost died being left dehydrated in the garage this past winter. I can’t recall mine had that much red in the flesh.
Checking my maps and notes, I think it’s Nadia.
