After spending 5 or 6 years in citrus, which is considered short, these are my favorite ones.
All three Gold Series mandarins, Tahoe, Yosemite and Shasta are my tops. Second is Lee/Nova. Do I need more varieties? No!!
Why? Because they are best tasting and also, BIG. Nothing puny about these guys.
These varieties are not easy to come buy.
While writing about out of zone fruit growing, how about Jaboticaba? Having tried all kinds of sub tropical and tropical fruit trees, got only this one leftover. Really enjoy this one.
I have considered a grape tree but decided I have enough with the citrus trees.
Of these three,is one your favorite and which gets the biggest?
Shasta is the smallest but still big by mandarin standards. It is the most productive. Growing these mandarins in zone 7, Arkansas compared to mandarins bought from 2 specialty stores here, guess, mine were better tasting.
Can’t believe!
My Tahoe Gold (TDE #3) has yellowed and looks sad in my greenhouse over the winter (low temps in the upper 40s to low 50s), at least compared to all my smaller citrus seedlings, which stayed green but also went dormant. I’m hoping it’ll perk back up as things warm up in the spring, though. Bought as a 5gal plant a year ago and potted up to 10gal, but no blooms yet.
My best so far are Owari, Clementine and Page mandarins. Do the Gold series ones taste better?
What do they taste like. I think Luis grows them as well.
I’ve had a Kishu mandarin for two years now. In its second season it produced 70 small, sweet fruit. Here’s what it looked like after being brought out from its winter greenhouse home last April. I would like to try another variety, but the greenhouse is full!
Lee/Nova taste about the same as Page but is much larger. L/N is just a bit better tasting. My page was about 9 years old when replaced.
One thing about taste,do you like just sweet taste. There are a bunch of sugar sweet mandarins, not my taste but my wife like sweet citrus.
Which ones does she like the best?
She tried one, can’t finish not sweet enough. All three Gold Series aren’t just sweet, It’s just the right combination to make eating them more enjoyable. Sweet and rich tasting.
I also grow Xie shan and shiranui , both top varieties.
I only have a Shasta Gold of the gold collection. I was highly recommended by Brian. Mine is still a baby so no fruit yet but can’t wait to taste the fruit! I really like the shiranui, xie shan and kishu. For whatever reason my page mandarin give my very small fruits the size of golf ball. Are they supposed to be like that?
No, they are decent size, Lee/Nova is much better in size, juice and taste. Page is still a good juicy one.
