Soil testing--how?

How do you all do your soil testing–do you use your state extension service or test yourselves?

Are at home tests sufficiently accurate?

I took mine to our county extension office, run by U-Kentucky. It’s very reasonable, only $3 per sample. Of course, your agent’s price will vary. Maybe you have a Utah St or BYU office in or near your county?

I’ve vaguely heard of self-test kits, but don’t know of their accuracy, or their costs, which would prob be higher than taking samples to an ag office.

Same here. County extension office ran through the ag school at WVU. It’s a free service here.

I wouldnt rely on home test results. I drop mine off at a local soil testing lab. If you have much for row crop agriculture in your area you will have a lab.

It’s not offered by my state extension service at any price. I send mine to Umass for $15-$21 for a reasonably complete test. I’ve been well pleased by the service, although they are not fast this time of year.

Don’t know why I thought I could guess and eyeball it all those years. Well worth the money, and even in a backyard situation, the savings in unnecessary ferts mitigates the expense considerably…
