Those look good. Did you official fruit tasters get to sample these? What do those taste like? Iāve never seen, nor tasted one in these parts.
I have a tree too, it produced about 66 fruits last year. taste like a white nectarine. I myself find the flavor rather boring, but I canāt get the brix high here most years.
I top worked two scaffolds with Red Haven. Something that works well here.
I probably will rework the whole tree.
The kids had them for breakfast this morning along with some small 24 brix Harko nectarines. I did not get their opinion but the Harkos were eaten first. I find they are just like a sweet, rich, white nectarine. I prefer white nectarines like Arctic glo and Heavenly white when they are high brix and firm.
Mine are still quarter that size and rock hardā¦UGHā¦ripening seems to be taking forever this year. The Puget Gold cots are just ripe. Itāll be Halloween before i eat Flavor King at this rate. Good lookers. Good fruit.
Here Arctic Glo is fantastic, even when low brix, I will always grow that one. Not one graft on the tree, I want as many as possible. It also yields about 70 fruits a year and is a winner for me. I like the high acid of the fruit. I think the nectaplum would be fine if I could get the brix up. Not possible here most years, oh well, best to use what works in your area.
I said this before but mine cracked horriblyā¦but has been pretty stable now. I removed the worst ones and have been protecting it when rain is in the forecastā¦it gets moved into the garage like last night. I have noticed that its very bushy? for a peachā¦like the fruit are all hidden under leavesā¦vs some of my other nectos.
Yeah Iām at a loss as to why that happened? Neither of these ever cracked, not even one for me. Both look great this year again.
Summer Silk is what iām excited aboutā¦it has a more oblong shape to it (not round)ā¦there are about 10 on my container tree⦠They look fantastic. Raspberry red is loaded, but those are way behind.
I agree Arctic Glo is fantastic everywhere, and I love the acid too, which is still there when really sweet, just not as much. It is also a beautiful fruit to look at inside and out. Not to mention the gorgeous hot pink blossoms in spring. Mine were super this year, the one I tested was 23 brix and intensly sweet and juicy with a rich tang. About as good as fruit gets for me! I like them right as they soften just a bit, maybe a day or two after picking firm ripe. Probably in my top 5 favorite fruits!
What else do you like?
Last year I bought some Spice Zee nectaplums from a farm fruit stand in Brentwood and liked them enough to buy a tree. I planted it in January, it bloomed and produced four fruits. I ate the first one yesterday. It had a bit of thrips damage but only superficial and clean otherwise. I didnāt measure Brix, but all the fruit I grow are very sweet (a lot of heat, a lot of sun, and measured irrigation).
I have had a problem with stinkbugs on my Arctic Glows in the past so they never ripened completely. We got chickens and this year stinkbug pressure is way down so my AGs completely ripened. I think surpassing heavenly white for flavor. To answer your question, my top 5 favorite fruits would be June Pride peach, Flavortop nectarine, Flavor Supreme pluot, Flavor King pluot, and Arctic Glow nectarine. I think Arctic Supreme peach and Bing cherry should make the list as well, so many good fruits, these are the fruits I look forward to every year and where I am are superior for flavor as to my families taste. I Believe you would like them too!
I have Flavor Supreme and King, Supreme only ever makes a few, but King does OK, I have 30-40 this year. Both are named right!
Such a difference in home grown and farmers market fruit. Like you said, a lot of heat, a lot of sun, and measured irrigation makes a big difference! Enjoy your nectaplums!
My top five might be: Honey Royale nectarine this includes Honey Lite, Honey Blaze, and Honey Diva they are all about the same, Bing sweet cherry at 30-32 brix these are scarce as henās teeth, Flavor Supreme pluot, Flavor King pluot, then maybe Orangered apricot, but there are many in this area. Itās more about how theyāre grown than the fruit. Summer Muscat grape is very special flavor.
Arctic Glo was too acidic for me. My system concentrates the acid along with the sugar.
Flavor King was good here, very unique, excited about the large crop.
June Pride probably wouldnāt work here, blooms too early.
Very nice line up! I see 3 of your favorites match mine. I have not tasted Orangered yet so really looking forward to those next year. To bad you didnāt like Arctic Glo, I used to think it was a bit tart but they were so good this year. They seem to really sweeten up on the counter after 2 days. Have you tried honey spring? I was thinking about trying that and honey blaze next year. You have really talked up the honey series so Iām sure its really good. I have a grape that tastes like a Muscat, its called sweet scarlet and is my favorite.
Glad to hear your Flavor King were good there! June Pride is not an early blooming peach, 900 to 1000 chilling hours per commercial catalogue. It is also on the top recommended cold country and DWN house favorites. Recommended for zones 5 to 9 So it may actually work for you! They are sensational peaches, even better than my best pluots, the very best fruit I grow! This years crop has been 22 to 27 brix averaging 24 to 25!!
Yeah i was thinking of May Pride and Evaās Pride both have very low chill hours. Those tend to come out of dormancy if we have a warm spell. Even some Southern peaches donāt work here, like Loring, which can be fine, but sometimes blooms early, a great peach too, OK, Iāll add June Pride to my list! Bacterial Spot is also a concern for many of us, but itās not bad here. Like Oā Henry grows fine, but tends to get Bac spot easy, another fantastic peach too.
