Probably Splash the only Pluot fruiting well here in Seattle areas. Almost all the others Pluot no fruit set every year. Too many Pluots varieties but not much choice for us. Just got the Splash bare root yesterday 1.31.23
Nice. Hopefully this had better roots than the peach.
The splash Pluot has better roots but very short (this is my 2nd one). When I ordered the Flavor punch they sent me very good size tree, and I ordered one more Sweet treat and got the whip with a pencil size. Anyway happy with splash after read the reviews. I don’t plant flavor Greenade. I had one before, take long time to grow.
The veteran peach isn’t the curl resistant peach. I do not keep it under the rain for now . Might not surviving here without spraying treatment.
I don’t understand the comment about Veteran. Are you saying you planted it where it is protected from rain? Or that you aren’t keeping it?
When I see it in Costco selling only $20. And information said it performs well in northwest. So I bought it without researching much. I planted it in container and placed under the roof patio for now. I know it will has leaf curl. Not sure to plant it for permanent. I would like to try on Nanaimo only.
Yeah, it doesn’t seem like a good choice for in the open, since I know you don’t spray.
Considering the crappy roots, and poor variety, I would have no qualms with returning it to Costco, although probably more hassle than its worth for you.
But protected from rain, I think most peaches will do fine.
It’s okay to keep veteran peach. If luckily leaf out in Spring, I keep move it back and forth roofing patio every year for testing let see how it doing.
sorry if it was me who got you to buy Veteran, I should have noted that as usual 3/4 of the stuff in costco should come with an asterisk or is just a bad choice for most gardeners. (such as: cherries need spinosad, non-scab-resistant apples are probably a bad choice, peaches need PLC sprays, some other stone fruits are plainly unsuitable…). veteran this year was one of the rare ones where the asterisk was just right for me
My hobby love to play and learn with fruit trees. Really like tree ripening peaches. Keep trying with all new trees as well. It’s also interesting how veteran peach performs in my areas. I planted and removed too many fruit trees already. I decided myself so don’t worry. Have fun gardening Michael. @z0r .
Pretty little fruit.
I grafted a branch onto my Flavor Grenade for pollination mostly but it course I’d be happy with fruit as well.
Those look very nice Vincent is this a new tree?
How is you Nadia doing now? On the dieback branches are the buds in the leaf axils still green?
Dennis
Everything still OK @DennisD. I had very good year for Nadia. Splash is my new Pluot planted last year. Below pictures of my harvested Nadia for making jam just done a couple weeks ago.
Yeah, this was my best year for Nadia by far too.
Mine flowered a whole bunch and set zero fruit. There’s a sole Candy Heart hanging on the tree next to it.
Did you harvest your splash Pluot yet. They’re still firm but I harvested some today because squirrels try to snacking them. Love their color red orange beautiful fruits.
I’ve picked some damaged ones that are ripe in some parts. The clean ones are not fully ripe yet. Once they have some give to them and are juicy they are super delicious.
When there is any green left and under ripe, they aren’t very good. The ones on top there probably aren’t good.
Have you had any ripe ones yet? What do you think of them?
I still have 1/3 fruits on the tree , and waiting for them getting softer and more ripe. They’re very flavorful to me. I don’t have any fully ripping ones yet. They’re very high scores taste test every year.
My Splash have the biggest crop this year, but the quality this year is not consistent. Some are as great as ever, but some are very bland and hardly worth eating. Plus I’ve gotten more rotten ones. Perhaps weather, or maybe they did better with less water and growth like years past. We’ll see.
The other pluots did better this year than they usually do.
