need some help folks. just put in 3 cherries. 2 juliet and a carmine jewel. they’re just leafing out. what kind of spray schedule should i have and what chemicals to use? im surrounded with chokecherry/ pin cherry full of black knot. do they stand a chance?
Here is my spray schedule for sour cherries in my orchard
-Late fall after trees are mostly bare; Chlorothalinol(for BK), oil and copper
-Late winter dormant; Chlorothalinol(for BK), oill and copper
-Bud swell; Chlorothalinol (for Leaf Spot and BK)
-Shuck Split; Chlorothalinoll(for Leaf Spot) and Imidan(for PC)
-After shuck split, every two to three weeks till harvest.; Myclobutinol(for Leaf Spot and Powdery Mildew)
-After harvest, every two to three weeks; till new leaf growth stops Myclobutinol(for Leaf Spot and Powdery Mildew) and one or two of these spays I will add in some Carbaryl(for Japanese Beatles).
Like you I am surrounded by wild cherry trees that are infested with Black Knot. I cut down about 20 or so of the closest infected trees. I think that helped allot, but it is still in the air.
The Chlorothalinol seems to help with BK. I intentionally skipped Chlorothalinol on three plum trees last fall and this spring. Two of those three trees are the only trees showing BK hits (so far). It without doubt helps with cherry leaf spot, but it can only be sprayed up until shuck split so at that point I switch over to the Myclo until terminal growth stops.
I should also mention, I am growing Balaton and Montmorency here in eastern PA(Zone 6b). Both have severe problems here with Leaf Spot, but for the most part, only the Montmorency seems to get the powdery mildew.
Hope this helps.
jamie
thank you. now to find these chemicals. im pretty rural so there isnt a local source. what is suck split? leafout?
Oh wow. I wonder if this type of schedule is needed for my region of Texas. I figured I could just get by without any spraying at all with sour cherries.
Moose,
You can order any of these products on line. Just google chlorothalonil fungicide products (a common trade brand is Daconil) and myclobutanil products (the one I use if Immunox).
It really depends on where you are. In a drier area, you have less fungal issues. In a hot, humid area, you have more issues. I do not have high pressure from wild cherry trees with black knot, so I only deal with chery leaf spot ( very common disease) so I need only two sprays of myclobutanil a season.
Black knot is a tougher issue. You need to find out what diseases cherry trees in your area has and adjust your spray accordingly. Would your extension service be able to give your some advice?
im going to have to touch bases with them for sure to see what they recommend. im in a cold but wet area and fungal problems are common up here. things get wet and stay that way sometimes for long periods.
It’s crazy to read this spray schedule. I spray nothing on my one sour cherry other than oil and copper in the fall, and I harvest a massive load of Montmorency cherries. I barely lose a cherry to anything. I’m 7B central MD with multiple wild cherry trees in my yard. I know several people local to me who do the same and have done so for a long time.
suprising you don’t have issues! MD is crazy muggy! maybe i should wait and see if i have any issues before investing in all these chemicals. already have copper and hort oil.
