Sprayed peach tree, buds died

I sprayed Neem and fungicide together in a short window of no rain @ 50 degrees early Feb. The new bud swells all dried up and the smaller branches died. I’m a novice and pretty sure I did something wrong. Too much too little too late? This is a 20 tree started from a branch cutting and stuck into the ground 3 years ago.

Hi Robin
I have not heard of this way to propagate a peach tree, but I doubt your neem and fungicide did harm if the tree was still dormant. It could just be dieback due to a weak rootstock! That would be my hunch.

Dennis, I was warned of inferior fruit chances from that method yet have had nice peaches for 2 years in a row. You’re probably right. Upper branches are still green (where I couldn’t reach to prune or spray) Hmm, maybe just get out of Nature’s way? When I prune peaches and roses I dust with Root Tone and just stick 'em in ground or pots. About 50% take or die. Can’t bear to discard healthy cuttings

What fungicide product did you apply? Sometimes you can burn tender parts depending on the product. Neem should not burn, it primarily smothers out mite and aphids.

I would check your bottles to make sure you didn’t use weed killer by mistake… I can’t think of anything else that would do that.

Thx. The sprayer was bought clean just for peach tree spraying. I used a low ratio mix of both. We’ll see what happens up top.

The All Seasons oil is the safest oil you can buy. The copper product is so diluted it’s pretty much worthless. No way did they harm your tree. Sounds like blossom blight to me.

Thx Dennis. I used the lowest ratio oz/gallon Bonide Copper Fungicide. We shall see how we progress and record it in the garden log. I used the same solution on my boss’s orchard. :flushed: No scathing msgs yet but… anyone hiring?? LOL

I think Drew might be right about blossom blight, I didn’t notice you were in zone 9 so things are starting to get going there. Still, it’s odd that the parts you didn’t spray are better than the parts you did spray. One time I had all my nice labeled containers but accidentally grabbed the wrong bottle without looking and sprayed weed killer on my persimmons. Fortunately I noticed it five minutes later and hosed them off and they were OK. After that I put the weed killer bottle in a different spot.

Scott I can imagine your thoughts… "Oh my gosh, did I? Nah, no way. Wait… Did I???" So glad the water bath saved them. My only weed killer is 30% acidity vinegar. Since it eats up rubber gaskets, It has it’s own dedicated sprayer that gets rinsed out for 5 minutes after use. But, could happen I’m sure.

If he sprayed neem oil during midday it quite possibly could burn the buds, what time of day did you spray. If I spray neem it’s always right at dusk, because I’ve definitely burned foliage with it. While buds are pretty tough that oil could damage them with intense sun I think that sounds pretty feasible to me.

It’s not neem. It’s a lot safer than neem.
It’s called All Seasons for a reason. I agree if it was neem. I myself would not use neem. But all seasons is not neem. Bonide makes neem too. All Seasons is a mineral oil, a paraffinic oil that can be used in the growing season.i would say it’s an excellent product.
Bonide copper though is useless get Kocide which is about 50 times stronger and works extremely well.

Here are pics of the burned up buds and some thinner branch death. I sprayed on a partially cloudy 60 degree day around 1pm with both All Season’s Horticulture Oil @ 2 oz/gal. and Bonide Copper Fungicide @ 1 oz/gal. I mis-spoke before: there is no Neem in the All Season’s… just Mineral Oil 98%. Apologies

It doesn’t look like damage from your spray. Looks normal stub from previous pruning or some form of disease/cold kill.

Thanks. All the new little buds did dry up and fall off, so I’m going with cold kill. It froze a couple nights the following week.
I REALLY APPRECIATE this site!

Yes but all seasons is not neem. See photo of the products he used.(posted before your comment).

Gkight: So sorry, I mis-spoke. I used All Seasons which contains only mineral oil, not neem. My error!
