Any thoughts on what type of squash I have here? This has volunteered in my friend’s yard the past two years, and has looked pretty consistent each year. Shape resembles a turban squash, but color not so much.

Cucurbita maxima. Likly a mix of ‘Turks turban’ with a spotted variety eg. ‘Iran’.
We randomly planted a bunch of winter squash in our front foundation bed after the area had been cleared of old shrubs and vines. planted the seeds in late may/early june. not much, but the location was far from ideal and not the best sun exposure.
we planted:
- Black futsu - produced 1 fruit
- Honey nut - produced zero fruit
- Ayote green flesh - produced 1 fruit
- Musquee de Maroc - produced 2 fruit
- Burpees butternut - a few fruit
- Tahitian melon - maybe 1 small one?
- Long Island cheese - produced 1 tiny immiture fruit

Cooked one of the huge squash I’ve been eying because of its weight and size of the fruit and how the prolific vine sent down roots on every leaf node even when it wasn’t touching the ground.
The texture was smooth, the flavor was nice sweet nutty flavor without bitterness. I am pleased with its performance I am going to grow its seeds next year.
The seed cavity was easy to scrape out too.
